The Grammy Award for the best song of the year ( Grammy Award for Song of the Year ) is awarded by the National Academy of Art and Science of Sound Recording for “artistic achievements, technical mastery and significant contribution to the development of sound recording without taking into account sales and chart positions” annually since 1959 years [1] . It is one of the most prestigious awards in the modern music industry, which can be compared with the Oscar in cinema. The Song of the Year nomination is one of the 4 most important ( The Big Four ) of more than 100 other nominations for this award [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] .

The Grammy Award for the best song of the year ( Song of the Year ) is awarded for a single single or track, its recipient is the author, songwriter, who first created the song. In this sense, “song” means a written song, but not recorded, as in the nomination “ Record of the Year ” , where it is awarded to the performer, sound engineer and producer of the song [4] [7] . According to the description of the nomination, the award is awarded to the author (s) of the song, which should contain a melody and text, and should be either a new song or a song that first gained fame during the year of nomination. Compositions containing samples or interpolations do not have the right to be nominated for an award ” [8] .
Starting from the 1960s, separate genre categories were also introduced for the authors: For the best country song (since 1965), For the best rock song (since 1992), For the best R&B song , as well as relatively recent nominations - For the best rap song (since 2004), For the best gospel song (since 2006), For the best modern Christian song (since 2012) and For the best folk song .
History and Records
For the first time, the prize was awarded in 1959 to the author of the song “ Volare ” to the Italian singer Domenico Modugno . She is still the only non-English song among all the winners of this Grammy category [comm. 1] [9] . Two-time winners in this category were such performers as Henry Mancini ( 1962 and 1964 ), Johnny Mercer ( 1962 and 1964 ), James Horner ( 1988 and 1999 ), Will Jennings ( 1993 and 1999 ), U2 ( 2001 and 2006 ) and Adele ( 2012 and 2017 ).
During the 20th Grammy ceremony, an atypical precedent occurred, two songs became laureates at once: “Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star Is Born )” ( Barbra Streisand / Paul Williams ) and “You Light Up My Life” ( Joe Brooks ). Throughout the history of the Grammy, such situations have occurred only a few times, and in this nomination they have not been repeated.
Only two performers in the history of the Grammy Award were able to receive all 4 of her most prestigious awards ( Song , Album , Record and Rookie of the Year ): Christopher Cross and Adele . However, if Adele was able to do this in only a few years, then Christopher received all 4 awards in one year (this happened in 1981 ) [10] . Only five performers managed to win the award for the best song along with the award as the best new artist of the year in one ceremony: Christopher Cross (1981), Alisha Keyes (2002), Amy Winehouse (2008), Fun. (2013) and Sam Smith (2015) [3] [11] .
In many cases, songwriters have also been performers: Domenico Modugno , Henry Mancini , John Lennon and Paul McCartney , Joe South , Paul Simon , Carol King , Barbra Streisand , Christopher Cross , Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie , Billy Joel , Sting , Bobby McFerrin , Eric Clapton , Bruce Springsteen , Seal , Sean Colvin , James Horner , Rob Thomas , Alisha Keyes , Luther Wandross , John Mayer , U2 , Dixie Chicks , Amy Winehouse , Coldplay , Beyonce , Lady Antebellum , Adele , Fun. , Lord , Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran .
Representatives of the United States won in this category more often than others, however, among other laureates featured musicians from the UK , Australia , Austria , Italy and Ireland
Twenty-nine laureate songs also won the Record of the Year category . As of 2018, no author has won Song of the Year twice in a row.
