Academic career
He graduated from Cambridge Royal College . Since 1911 he taught ancient history here . In 1925 he was elected professor at the Chair of Ancient History of the University of Cambridge and held it until 1951 (until his retirement).
He was one of the editors of the first version of the " Cambridge History of the Ancient World ", (published from 1923 to 1939). Together with S. A. Cook, he was a member of the editorial board of all twelve volumes of this famous series. In addition, in this edition of his pen belongs to ten chapters.
Cryptographic Service
During World War I, he worked as a cryptographer in Room 40 . From 1939 to 1943 he was an employee of Bletchley Park (aka Station X ), the largest British analytical and cryptographic center, functioning during both world wars.
