Robert Stephen Paul Bekes [2] ( naderl. Robert Stephen Paul Beekes ) ( September 2, 1937 , Haarlem - September 21, 2017 , Uggstest ) is a Dutch linguist. Professor retired in Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at Leiden University . Author of numerous books on the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European language , including the textbook Comparative Indo-European Linguistics: An Introduction . A supporter of the kurgan hypothesis , in his works he constantly criticized the Anatolian hypothesis .

Also dealt with the problem of pre-Indo-European languages .
He was the leading authority in the study of the Etruscan language ; in collaboration with L. Bauke, van der Meer developed the hypothesis of the Etruscan origin of Asia Minor [3] .
Until the end of his life, he was engaged in the study of the pre-Greek substrate , continuing the research that F. Kuiper began [4] .
