History

Mention of Gudauri and the Cross Pass are found in sources from the 18th-19th centuries ( Nikolai Nefedyev , M. Yu. Lermontov , Alexander Dumas and others), in connection with the passage of the most important transport highway here. With the beginning of the reconstruction of the Georgian Military Highway, the Russian administration in Gudauri built a railway station Gudaur.

There are photographs of the tunnel in the section of Gudauri- Kobi , the postal station Gudauri I, a drawing by M. Lermontov Yu. “Ruins on the banks of the Aragva” depicting a mystical castle - a fortress , which in appearance and description resembles a place located on the opposite side of the gorge in the upper river White Aragvi . The tortuous Mletsky serpentine in his notes describes Alexander Dumas.

According to literary scholars, Gudauri is one of the possible sources of origin of the name of Prince Gudal invented by Lermontov in "Demon" [6] .

The development of the Gudauri ski resort began in 1975-1985. and continues to the present. The ski season begins in December and lasts until April; the average snow cover in winter reaches 1.5 meters. The tracks are equipped with lifts, the lower station is at an altitude of 1990 meters, the upper station is at an altitude of 3307 meters (the highest points are Mount Sadzele and Mount Kudebi ).

On March 16, 2018, on one of the resort’s cableways, it stopped (due to a voltage drop), and then, due to a mistake by the lift operator, the cableway started (at about twice the speed) to move in the opposite direction, seats with people began to descend from the mountain at high speed. One seat broke on the elevator support on a bend, and other chairs began to crash into this barrier. Most skiers managed to jump off the seats before they even reached the support, while others were thrown out of the seats during a U-turn. The road was stopped after about two minutes after the start of the breakdown. As a result, 11 people were seriously injured [8] [9] .
