He participated in the Polish and French campaigns, at the headquarters of the 2nd Army Corps, received the levels for the Iron Crosses of both degrees (rewarding).
Since June 22, 1941, he participated in the German-Soviet war, regiment commander of the 32nd Infantry Division . Fights in the Dvinsk area. Since September 1941 - Colonel, in October 1941 he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
In 1942 - fighting in the Demyansk cauldron . In January 1942, Colonel Wegener was awarded Oak Leaves (No. 66) to the Knight's Cross. Since June 1942, he has commanded the 32nd Infantry Division, Major General. Since March 1943 - lieutenant general, fighting in the area of ββStaraya Russa.
Since September 1943 - commander of the 50th Army Corps , near Leningrad. Since December 1943 - in the rank of infantry general. In 1944 - fighting in the Pskov region, then in Latvia. September 17, 1944 awarded with Swords (No. 97) to the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. September 24, 1944 died as a result of an air raid of Soviet attack aircraft.
