Helveti ( Latin: Helvetii ) is a large tribe of unknown origin that was an ally of the Boys and inhabited the northwestern part of modern Switzerland . The Romans called it Helvetia ( lat. Helvetia ). Strabo places the Helvetian lands in the headwaters of the Rhine next to the Secans (the Jura Mountains serve as the boundary of their possessions).
The first written sources about helvetites date back to the 2nd century. BC e. In 58 BC e. the Helvetites were defeated by Caesar and at first became dependent on Rome by the Federals , and later were completely subordinate to Rome. This led to a significant romanization of the Helvetus.
The name of the Helvets is preserved in the Latin version of the name Switzerland ( Latin Confoederatio Helvetica ), also this name is found in the abbreviation of the Swiss currency , in the Swiss car code and in the name of the Swiss Internet domain ( CH ). Swiss stamps also often use the name Helvetia .
