Distribution and Ecology
In nature, representatives of the species grow on Mount Wellington and, quite abundantly, on the central plateau of Tasmania .
Prefers well-drained places in the subalpine zone .
One of the most frost-resistant species. It withstands without damage a short-term temperature drop of −11 ... −10 ° C and a long temperature decrease of −10 ... −9 ° C, but with a prolonged decrease in temperature to –13 ... –12 ° C it freezes to the root.
Botanical Description
The tree reaches 9-12 m high in the homeland, 30 m on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus.
The bark is smooth, falling, white with green and red spots.
Young leaves are opposite, in a large number of pairs, sessile or stalk-bearing, heart-shaped, round, elliptical or ovoid, 6 cm long, 7 cm wide, bright bluish, town-like. Adults - alternate, petiolate , narrowly lanceolate, or widely lanceolate, 8-18 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm wide, dark green, shiny.
Umbrellas are axillary , three-flowered ; the leg of the umbrella is compressed or almost cylindrical, 1.3–2 cm long; flower-buds on pedicels , urnid, bluish, 12-14 mm long, 7 mm in diameter; the lid is widely conical, with a lump in the center or almost peaked, three times shorter than the receptacle tube and slightly wider than it. Anthers are oblong or rounded, open with wide parallel slots; a piece of iron on the dorsal side of the anther that stands out is large.
Fruits on legs, urnid, 15-17 mm long, 7-10 mm in diameter; the disc is small, cut or convex; valves deeply depressed.
Blossoms in the homeland in February - April; on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus - in October - February.
Meaning and Application
Light wood , used in furniture production.
The leaves contain essential (eucalyptus) oil (1.13%), consisting of cineole , pinene , esters and sesquiterpenes .
