History

Adult Sholoitzcuintle or Mexican Hairless Dog

The name "Sholoitzcuintle" comes from the Nahuatl Astekan language - on behalf of the god Xolotl " Sholotl " and the words itzcuīntli , "itzcuintli" , "dog".

The origin of these dogs goes deep into history. In ancient burials on the territory of Mexico, mummies of dogs and clay figures depicting the Sholoitzcuintle are found. These findings date back 5000-3000 years BC. e. [2] [3] The fact that these figurines depict exactly naked dogs is indicated by the presence of two types of figures: some showed strokes depicting wool, while the others were absolutely smooth, that is, naked. The natives appreciated their meat. The breed was considered the earthly representative of the god Sholotl , from which her name came from. The goal of the Sholoitzcuintle was to accompany the souls of the dead to the afterlife [4] . The Franciscan missionary, naturalist and historian Bernardino de Sahagun described in detail the Sholoitzcuintle breed. After the Spanish conquest of Mexico, the Sholoitzcuintles began to be exterminated as an object of pagan worship and soon almost disappeared. In 1954, Norman Pelem Wright made an attempt to save the breed, for this he went to the very center of Mexico in the remote Indian villages, where he negotiated a dozen dogs from the Indians . On May 1, 1956, a Mexican hairless dog was officially recognized in Mexico. By 1960, the Mexican Kennel Federation had registered 40 sholo, and in 1965 there were already 70 dogs. Now in Mexico, there are several thousand Mexican hairless dogs. The first dogs were brought to Russia (USSR) from Cuba in 1986.

Standards

  • Average size: 36 to 45 cm.
  • Miniature size: 25 to 35 cm.

General appearance of the naked variety

An important characteristic and strangeness of the breed is the complete or almost complete absence of any coat and smooth, delicate skin. The body of Xoloitzcuintle has harmonious proportions, the chest is developed, the chest is wide, the legs and tail are long.

Leather

Due to the complete absence of wool, the skin is of particular importance for this breed. It is smooth and very sensitive to the touch. The skin seems warmer than woolen breeds, since the heat is not filtered through the wool, but is given directly. Dogs with fair skin need more protection from sunlight. Accidentally obtained scars and scars should not be penalized by a decrease in rating when examining a dog at the show. The dog sweats through the paw pads and interdigital membranes and tends not to suffocate.

Disqualifying Vices
