Technical Features
- Tatra 87 was another representative of the so-called. “Tatra concept”, started by the Tatra 11 car: spinal tube instead of the frame, air-cooled engine, independent suspension of all wheels, swinging drive axles.
- The engine in the gearbox assembly was located behind the rear wheels. The passengers were protected from the engine noise and heat by a spacious luggage compartment between the engine compartment wall and the rear seat backrest (there was a gas tank under the front hood, two 6 V batteries connected in series with a total capacity of 60 A.h, an oil radiator and two spare wheels) and an additional glass inside the body. No cooling problems were experienced. Air cooling of the engine with two powerful multi-blade centrifugal belt-driven fans did not require water, which significantly simplified the operation of the car in desert and arid regions, as shown by the journey of Hanzelka and Zikmund.
- Rare at that time full-flow oil filter , oil cooling system with a separate radiator, rack-and-pinion steering , steering wheel lock.
- Improved aerodynamics made it possible to increase directional stability compared with the previous model. The body had a “fish fin” ( keel ) on the roof, as well as the last improvement Tatra 77 , which increases the lateral surface in the rear part of the weather vane (a measure taken by Hans Ledwinka, saving his offspring from yawing). To reduce oversteer, an original rear suspension design was invented.
- Tatra 87 was the first Czechoslovak machine with an all-metal body: the failure of the wooden frame significantly reduced the weight of the car. With the same purpose, the dimensions of the car, including the wheelbase, were reduced, the engine received an aluminum cylinder head and a crankcase made of magnesium alloy , the cast-iron cylinder block itself was ribbed.
- The system of centralized lubrication of the chassis and steering, driven by a separate pedal (according to the instructions after every 200 km of run), applied due to difficult access to the main gear units.
- "Panoramic" windshield of three flat parts, separated by narrow racks, as if falling out of sight.
- All the doors were hung on the middle pillars with protruding hinges, but the front opened against the direction of movement, and the rear - along the way. Door handles were recessed. In the racks located the same direction indicators semaphore type.
- Most cars had a sliding metal sunroof above the front seats.
- Three-way front lighting system. The central headlight acted as a searchlight and turned on with a separate button on the dashboard; on special request, it could be equipped with a steering system that tracks the rotation of the steering wheel. Also, buttons on the panel included an electric starter and a sound signal.
- Different wheelbase on the right and left side - axles were installed with a slight offset.
- Until 1938, Tatra 87 had the right steering position. In 1946, the design was slightly changed: the car got headlights drowned in the wings.
