Title
The distribution was originally called Mandrake Linux. On February 24, 2005, Mandrakesoft bought the Brazilian Linux distributor, Conectiva , and, on April 7, 2005 , changed its name to Mandriva. One reason for the name change is the protracted lawsuit with Hearst Corporation, which owns the rights to the popular comic book character Mandrake the Magician .
Features
The distribution is deservedly considered very user friendly. In particular, it includes a unique utility - drakxtools , which allows you to fully configure the system, as well as its own package manager, the goal of which was to add automatic download and dependency installation in rpm. As working environments, KDE and GNOME are used. There is a distribution version distributed on LiveUSB.
History and Development
The first release of Mandrake Linux took place in July 1998 and was numbered 5.1, which corresponded to the version number of Red Hat Linux, on the basis of which Mandrake was created. The main difference from the original at that time was that the default desktop environment was KDE , which was distributed under a non-free license at that time. The distribution kit included original graphical utilities to configure the system, and the installation process was simplified. Version 7.0 had a graphical installer, used the urpmi package management system, and was translated into several languages, including Asian.
On March 15, 2006, Gael Duvall and several other Mandriva Linux distribution developers were fired. Francois Bonsillon ( French: François Bancilhon ) became the CEO of the company. Having worked in this post for two and a half years, Bonsillon was replaced on November 4, 2008 by the new CEO Erve Yahi ( French Hervé Yahi ) [1] . After this, Mandriva was followed by a series of layoffs of some employees. Adam Williamson , whose dismissal caused resentment among the Mandriva Linux user community, came under reduction. Such a violent reaction was caused by the fact that Williamson was the unofficial head of the Mandriva Linux community. As a result, an open letter was drawn up for the new executive director of the company, asking to reconsider the decision to dismiss Williamson. [2] On the official blog of Mandriva, Yahi explained the position of the company. [3]
The next release of Mandriva was released every 6 months, although the company made an attempt to switch to the annual development cycle in 2006-2007. It was announced that starting with the 2011 release, which was then released on August 28, 2011, Mandriva is moving on to the annual development cycle. This was the last distribution. The issue of launching bankruptcy proceedings in 2012 was discussed.
Work on Mandriva 2012 has been suspended. The availability of the alpha version of the OpenMandriva Lx 2013.0 distribution package has been announced [4] .

Bankruptcy
According to Arnaud Laprévote, CEO of Mandriva, as of July 2010, the company had lost about 30 million euros . [63] It was highly probable that the bankruptcy proceedings of the company would start on January 16, 2012. However, the bankruptcy of Mandriva in January 2012 did not take place. On May 27, 2015, the liquidation of Mandriva was officially announced. The reason for leaving the market was a lack of finance. [64]
Monbo-Labs Development Lab
On January 16, 2008, Mandriva and the Japanese Linux vendor Turbolinux announced the start of cooperation and the creation of a joint development laboratory Monbo-Labs. Monbo-Labs is organized with the aim of combining resources and technologies to implement the base system in each of these Linux distributions. According to a statement by Mandriva, the new version of the Mandriva Linux 2008.1 Spring distribution, which was released in spring 2008 , will use the results of Monbo-Labs. [65]
Distribution
Both the free version from the proprietary code (Mandriva Linux Free) and the one that includes it (LiveCD Mandriva Linux One) are available for download from an FTP server. The enterprise version of Mandriva Linux Powerpack, which includes commercial programs and modules, is available for a fee. There is also a version preinstalled on a flash drive (Mandriva Linux Flash).
Mageia
In September 2010, Mandriva liquidated its Edge-IT division due to financial difficulties, which resulted in the dismissal of most developers of the Mandriva Linux distribution. As a result of discussions, former employees decided to start developing the Mageia fork [66] .
OpenMandriva
The head of the French company Mandriva, announced the decision to transfer the authority to manage the development of the Mandriva Linux distribution to a separate independent organization. [67] For 6 months, the non-profit organization OpenMandriva Association was officially registered with the regulatory authorities of France, which now manages the development and oversees the development of the distribution formed after the transfer of Mandriva Linux to the community. In December 2012, the association was founded.
The first version of OpenMandriva Lx was 2013.0 Oxygen, which was released on November 22, 2013 .
