Bergkirchweich

Bergkirchwei ( German: Bergkirchweih ) is one of the oldest and largest folk festivals ( German: Volksfest ) in Bavaria ( Germany ), held annually in the middle Franconian city of Erlangen in the middle or end of spring.

The beginning of the festivities is always timed to coincide with Thursday before the feast of the Holy Trinity Day . Bergkirchwei, like Oktoberfest , always starts with the grand opening of the city of Erlangen by the mayor of the city at 17:00 and ends twelve days later on Monday evening.

The holiday takes place at the northern end of the historic city center at the foot and on the southern slope of the hill dominating in the relief of the city, called by the inhabitants of "Berg". The name of the hill is included in the full name of the holiday (the first part of the word) and defines the second, abbreviated and unofficial, but beloved by the locals folk name "der Berg" (or "Berch" in the local Franconian dialect of the German language ).

After the Oktoberfest in Munich and the Goibodenfest in Straubing, the Bergkirchwei holiday is the third largest festivity in Bavaria .
