History
Although these places have been inhabited since ancient times, until recently they were not united into a single administrative structure.
After the surrender of Japan in World War II by the Communists on September 8, 1945, the city of Jiaozuo (焦作 市) was created in the adjacent territories of the Sue and Boai counties. Then, during the Civil War, these places were captured by the Kuomintang troops, and in February 1948, the city of Jiaozo was transformed into Jiaozo County (焦作 县). In October 1948, these places again came under the control of the Communists.
After the victory in the civil war, the Pingyuan Province was established in August 1949 by the Communists, and these places were included in the Xinxiang Special (新乡 专区) Special Region of Pingyuan Province. In October 1949, Jiaozuo County was transformed into the Jiaozuo Mining District (焦作 矿区). On November 30, 1952, Pingyuan Province was disbanded, and the Xinxiang Special Region became part of the Henan Province. In 1956, the Jiaozo mining area was transformed into the city of Jiaozo, directly subordinate to the authorities of Henan Province.
In 1956, the districts of Xuu and Boai came under the jurisdiction of Jiaozo. In 1960, Suu and Boai counties were annexed to Jiaozo City, and Wenxian County to Qingyang County. In 1961, the districts of Xuyu, Boai and Wenxian were restored and again came under the jurisdiction of the Xinxiang Special District. In 1967, Xinxiang Special District was renamed Xinxiang County (新乡 地区).
In 1974, Jiaozuo became a city of dual subordination - at the same time obeying the authorities of Henan Province and the authorities of Xinxiang County. In 1982, Jiaozo was again directly subordinated to the authorities of Henan Province. In 1983, the districts of Xuu and Boai came under the jurisdiction of Jiaozo. In 1986, the counties of Wenxian, Wuji, Mengxian, Jiyuan and Qingyang passed under the jurisdiction of Jiaozuo. In 1988, Jiyuan County was transformed into a city county. In 1989, Qingyang became the city county, and in 1996, Mengxian County was transformed into Manzhou County.
In 1997, Jiyuan was removed from Jiaozuo’s jurisdiction and directly subordinated to the authorities of Henan Province, becoming a sub-district city.
