History
Legend has it that when the Great Yu pacified the flood, in the middle reaches of the Yellow River a gorge was made with three narrow spaces called the "three gates."
Under the Northern Wei Empire, the Shanzhou (陕州) region was created, which lasted until the Xinhai Revolution .
In 1949, the Shanzhou Special District (陕州 专区) was established, consisting of seven counties. In 1952, the Shanzhou Special District was annexed to the Luoyang (洛阳 专区) Special Region.
In 1957, the construction of the Sanmenyashuyushu Dam began , and by the decision of the State Council of the PRC in March 1957, the city of Sanmenxia was established, directly subordinate to the government of Henan Province. Due to the severance of Soviet-Chinese ties and the problems that began in the country's economy, Sanmenxia was demoted and became a city county subordinate to the Luoyang Special District. In 1969, Luoyang Special District was renamed Luoyang ((地区) District.
In 1986, Luoyang County was disbanded, and instead, Luoyang , Sanmenxia and Pingdingshan city districts were formed ; Sanmenxi urban district included the Mianchi, Shanxian, Lingbao and Lushi counties, the former Sanmenxia district became the Hubin district of the Sanmenxia city district, and Ima city district became the city county subordinate to the government of Henan province, which delegated its administration to the authorities of the Sanmenxi urban district.
In 1993, Lingbao County was transformed into a city county.
In 2015, Shanxian County was transformed into the Shanzhou area.
