Concert for Bangladesh

The Concert For Bangladesh is the name of two charity concerts organized by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar on August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York . Concerts attended by about 40 thousand people were organized to raise funds to help refugees from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh ) who suffered from the destructive cyclone Bhol and the actions of the Pakistani army in the War of Independence of Bangladesh . Concert for Bangladesh is considered to be the first major charity concert in history. Many famous artists performed at it: Bob Dylan , Eric Clapton , George Harrison , Billy Preston , Leon Russell , Ringo Starr and the British band Badfinger .

In December 1971, The Concert for Bangladesh released a music album, and in 1972 a concert film appeared. In 2005, the film was released on DVD along with a new documentary.

As a result of the concert, $ 243,418 was raised and transferred to the United Nations Children's Fund . Profit from the sale of the album and DVD continues to go to the George Harrison Foundation at the United Nations Children's Fund ^[1] .
