The Concert For Bangladesh is the name of two charity concerts organized by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar on August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York . Concerts attended by about 40 thousand people were organized to raise funds to help refugees from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh ) who suffered from the destructive cyclone Bhol and the actions of the Pakistani army in the War of Independence of Bangladesh . Concert for Bangladesh is considered to be the first major charity concert in history. Many famous artists performed at it: Bob Dylan , Eric Clapton , George Harrison , Billy Preston , Leon Russell , Ringo Starr and the British band Badfinger .
In December 1971, The Concert for Bangladesh released a music album, and in 1972 a concert film appeared. In 2005, the film was released on DVD along with a new documentary.
As a result of the concert, $ 243,418 was raised and transferred to the United Nations Children's Fund . Profit from the sale of the album and DVD continues to go to the George Harrison Foundation at the United Nations Children's Fund [1] .
