Story

Part One

The doctor flies to the planet Ud-sphere , where he learns that all beings in the universe dream of the same person - the Master . Having shown this dream to the Doctor, the uds give him a prediction about someone's return and the end of time as such. In a panic, the Doctor heads for December 24, 2009 to Lucy Saxon, the wife of the Master, but arrives too late. Lucy sacrifices herself to prevent her husband's resurrection.

Having managed to survive again, the Master begins to hide from the Doctor. Energy penetrates his body, due to which he has new abilities, but it slowly kills him. Having met the Doctor at the dump in the night, the Master is convinced that he is not crazy, and that his drums, which have been with him all his life, actually exist. A detachment of military men appears at the junkyard, who catch the Master and bring him to the house of millionaire Joshua Naismith. He forces the Master to fix the Gates of Immortality, which will make his daughter, Abigail, immortal. But the Master manages to outwit him, and hide in the gates codes that completely change the structure of the gates. The Doctor and Wilfred, who arrived, do not have time to stop the Master, and he starts the gates that turn all the people on Earth into him. They did not act only for two, except for the Doctor: on Wilfred, who could hide in a cabin protected from the action of the gates, and on Donna , who was half human, half Time Lord.

Part Two

The episode begins with a flashback in the Interim War. The Time Lords are predicted that their race will perish today, and only two will survive - the Doctor and the Master . Rassilon , president of the Time Lords, decides to establish physical and temporary contact with them in order to bring the race out of the Temporary War. To do this, he sends the rhythm of four beats to the Indomitable Whirlwind on the day when the Master entered the academy, as well as the Squirrel Star on Christmas Eve 2009.

At this time, the Master gained full control over the entire Earth and is preparing to turn it into a warship to capture the universe. The doctor is trying to persuade him to abandon this idea, but the Master decides to trace the source of his drumming with the help of six billion copies. The soldier, who ordered weapons on Wilfred by order of the Master, is Rozeter, an alien of the vinvochi race. Together with his girlfriend, Miss Adams, he moved with Doctor and Wilfred to his spaceship.

On the ship, the Doctor turned off all power systems so that they could not be tracked from the Earth. Together with Wilfred, they discuss how to save the Earth, and the Doctor admits that he will not be able to kill the Master under any circumstances. After that, the Master contacts him, reporting that the "White-pointed Star", which can be found on only one single planet - on Gallifrey, fell to Earth. The Doctor with horror understands that the Master will try to return the Time Lords, so he again turns on the ship and returns to Earth, but too late.

Using a diamond, the master manages to break the Temporary Castle, thereby pulling out the Time Lords, Gallifrey, and all the horrors of the Time War . Rassilon is going to break the Time Funnel, free all Time Lords from physical bodies and time constraints, destroying the entire universe. The doctor must stop the process with Wilfred’s gun. By killing Rassilon or the Master, he can once again lock up the war of Time. After much thought, the Doctor shoots into a device with a diamond, which was also the thread holding the Time Lords on Earth. Rassilon decides to kill the Doctor for his deed, but the Master, sacrificing himself, saves him and kills Rassilon, taking revenge for his life with a drum battle.

The doctor remains alive, but then he hears someone knock four times - a sound foreshadowing his death. This man is Wilfred, locked in a radiation chamber. Since the Master left the nuclear reactor turned on, the excess radiation enters this room, and you can get out of it only if another person is locked in the second chamber. The doctor does not want to die, but he decides that he has lived too long, so he frees Wilfred.

Until regeneration begins, he decides to visit all of his companions with whom he traveled: Martha with Mickey , Donna , Jack with Alonzo, Luke and Sarah Jane Smith, and also visits Rosa before their first meeting .

Eleventh Doctor

At the end of the episode, the Doctor enters the TARDIS and, together with the last words “I do not want to leave,” regenerates into the Eleventh Doctor.

During regeneration, the Doctor partially destroys the TARDIS .

Additional Information

  • At the beginning of the first part, the Doctor says that he made a mistake - he married Queen Elizabeth , and at the end of the Shakespeare Code series, Elizabeth I calls the Doctor a terrible enemy. The doctor does not understand why and thinks that he will find an explanation in the future. [4] [5] [6]
  • When the Doctor mentions someone similar to them, but red and small, during a meeting with Vinvocchi, he refers to Bannacaffalatta, whom he met in the series “The Journey of the Damned” ( English Voyage of the Damned ).
  • The creators of the series preferred to leave the question of the identity of the woman who came to Wilfred and stood at the end of the series in a sign of shame, like a crying angel from the Do Not Blink series, open, but it was understood that this was the mother of the Doctor. [7]
  • The doctor comes to the presentation of the book "Diary of incredible things Verity Newman." Verity is the great-granddaughter of Joan Redfern, a woman who fell in love with John Smith (Doctor, turned into a man) in the episodes of "Human Nature" and "Blood Family". Like herself, her great-granddaughter was played by the same actress - Jessica Hines.
  • The English name for the race created by the Master - “The Master race” - is a pun; it means both the "race of the Master" and the "race of the masters."
  • Initially, the series “End of Time: Part One” had the name “The Final Days of Planet Earth” , but it was decided that both parts should have the same name. [8] For the first time after the resumption of the series, two of its series, connected by the plot, received one name.
  • After writing the last scene with the Tenth Doctor , Russell sent the script to Stephen Moffat to write the first scene for the Eleventh Doctor.
  • Exclamation " Jeronimo! »Usually used by skydivers or when jumping from a height. It arose in the USA in 1940. [9]
  • On a suitcase in which Wilfred kept a pistol, the flag of Belgium .

Show and Criticism

Part One

The first show of the first part of the series took third place in the ranking and attracted approximately 10 million viewers, which amounted to 42.2% of the total television audience at that time [10] . The episode was given an excellent popularity index of 87. [11] . So far, the “Gladiator” has the best result, having received 89 points with a smaller audience.

As a result, the first part was watched by 11.57 million people. This is the highest rating for Doctor Who after the series resumed - the previous record for the Next Doctor series was broken by 1.4 million. [12] If you add simultaneous HD shows, the episode will take first place with 12.04 million viewers [ 13] .

Part Two

According to the nightly rating, the second part of the episode was watched by 10.4 million people (and another 389 thousand watched in HD ), which amounted to 35.5% of all watching television at that time [14] . Official ratings put the part in second place (11.79 million viewers) [15] . If you add an HD channel (480 thousand people), then the episode will occupy the top line. This makes the show "End of Time" just the third time in the entire history of the series, when the episode achieves such high acclaim [16] .

In his review of Part Two, Andrew Petty in The Daily Telegraph directed the episode Four Out of Five. He called it “a good time for family entertainment” [17] . He expressed dissatisfaction with the plot, considered it overly complicated [17] . However, Petty admitted that the episode conveyed a sense of the end of the world and it was difficult not to survive the events. He praised Tennant for his last work in The Doctor, but noted the hero's helplessness in the episode [17] . Petty concluded his review on an optimistic note: Matt Smith's youth and low fame open up good prospects for the new Doctor [17] .
