Biography
On his deathbed in 1148, the Duke of Conan III refused to recognize him as his successor, accusing him of the illegality of his birth. Conan III passed away on September 17 , making Conan, the son of his daughter Berta and her first husband Count Richmond Alain de Pentevre , his heir to the guardian of Berta Ed II ’s second husband, Count de Poroet .
However, Joel titled himself Duke of Brittany and Earl of Nantes, signing documents to the Duke. Soon, Hoel was forced to abandon the ducal title, but retained the county of Nantes . In 1154, Conan IV, wanting to rule on his own, had to fight simultaneously with his stepfather and Hoel. Conan, having suffered his first defeat from Ed on December 16, 1154 near Reze , took refuge in England in Richmond .
In 1156 , Joel was expelled from Brittany, after which he fled to Count Anjou Geoffrey VI . The date of death of Hoel III is unknown. With his death, the direct line of the Cornish house died out.
