Biography
Shortly before the start of his reign, Conan III married Matilda, the illegitimate daughter of the King of England, Heinrich I Boklerc , so that he could help him in the fight against the King of France, Louis VI .
In 1112, Duke Alain IV abdicated the throne in favor of his son Conan, who had entered into the affairs of the duchy earlier. Conan could also count on help from his mother Ermengarda, who successfully ruled the duchy during her husband’s participation in the First Crusade .
Conan tried to reduce the rights of his vassals by abolishing the transition to the feudal lords of sunken ships, cast ashore, and restricting the rights in noble estates. These reforms were made possible by the strong support of the Church.
On his deathbed in 1148, he renounced his son Joel on the grounds that he denied paternity with him. Then he made the heir of his grandson Conan IV [1] , appointing him Ed II de Poroet , second husband of Bertha , as his deputy. This renunciation played a role in the further history of the Duchy of Brittany .
