Biography
In 1482, he ascended the throne of the Emirate of Granada with the help of Abenseragov after the overthrow of his father Abu-al-Hassan Ali , nicknamed Moulay Hassan (1464-1482).
The reason for the change on the throne was the conflict in the bowels of the Nasrid dynasty . Abu al-Hassan Ali wanted to transfer power to his sons, who were born from the Christian concubine Isabél de Solis, captured, the daughter of the Spanish commander Sancho Hénes, in Islam who took the name of Soraya. She could not reconcile with his main wife Aysha al-Horr, the former mother of Boabdil. The fear that Moulay Hassan would appoint the children of Soraya to be the heir to the throne, prompted Aisha to conspire with the aristocratic clan of Abenseragov to overthrow Abu-Hassan Ali from the throne and put Boabdil on the throne. Cunningly freeing her son from imprisonment, Aisha organized the escape of Boabdil to Guadis , where he stood at the head of the troops of clan Abenseragi . Some time later, on July 5, 1482, Boabdil solemnly entered the throne of Granada , who was at war with the Kingdom of Castile and Leon .
In 1483, Mohammed XII was captured after being defeated by the Spaniards in Lucena . He gained freedom after the death of his father in 1485. He had to make concessions to the Kingdom of Castile and Leon. Boabdil managed to unite the Emirate of Granada , but his power was becoming weaker. The Spaniards won all the new battles, and the civil war continued, as Muhammad XIII tried to regain power. In 1487, the Spaniards conquered Málagu . Boabdil asked for help from the Turkish Sultan, but the latter’s help was limited to attacks by pirates on the coast. In 1489, Almeria fell.
In 1491, the siege of Granada began. On January 2, 1492 Mohammed XII capitulated, surrendering the city to the Catholic kings , Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon . This event marked the end of the Reconquista .
After the fall of Granada, Boabdil lived until 1494 on the estates granted to him by the Spaniards in Alpuharrah . He then moved to Fez , where he lived under the supervision of Sultan Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad. Unsuccessfully tried to get a refund of Granada.
Boabdil died in 1527 (according to other sources in 1533) in Fez , fighting at the head of the Fez forces against the Moroccan emperor. The place from which Boabdil took one last look at the Alhambra is still sometimes called the “ last breath of the Moor ” [1] or the pass “Sigh of Mavra” ( es: Puerto del Suspiro del Moro ).

- In 1595, Hinés Pérez de Ita published the novel The Tale of Segri and Abenserrah . The main part of the book is devoted to events taking place in Granada in recent years before the capture of the Granada Emirate by the Catholic Kings and the completion of the Reconquista .
- In 1892, Moritz Moszkowski wrote the opera "Boabdil - the last king of the Moors."
- South of Granada there is a mountain pass called Suspiro del Muro (i.e. Sigh Mavra, es: Puerto del Suspiro del Moro ), where, according to legend, Boabdil last looked at Granada and sighed, inconsolably weeping. In 1995, Salman Rushdie published The Moor's Last Sigh (El último suspiro del moro), a book devoted to this topic. According to legend, it was here that the mother said to Boabdil: “Unable to defend Granada as a man, she mourns her like a woman” (“Llora como mujer lo que no has sabido defender como un hombre”).
- Is one of the characters of the 2nd season of the Spanish historical TV series " Isabella "
