History

Pedrolino

The first mention of this character as Pierino (from Italian Pietro) dates back to 1547, the character's character was formed in the 16th century, even the names in various acting troupes changed from Pagliaccio (1570) to Gian-Farina (1598). The nickname Pagliaccio stuck to him from the fact that the servant in the play often slept in the hayloft, and in Italian “pagliaio” - piles of straw. By about 1598, the name Pedrolino appeared, coined by the actor of the Pedrolinos troupe Giovanni Pellesini, who later played in the troupes of Gelosi, Uniti and Confidenti. Pedrolino in the comedy was assigned the role of the object of pranks of his fellow comedians. In the illustrations, he can easily be confused with Pulcinella, and only the sleeves too long for his hands can indicate that this is Pedrolino.

Many theater historians draw a connection between the Italian Pedrolino and the later Pierrot of the French Comedy-Italienne, and although a connection between the two is possible, it remains unproven and seems unlikely, based on the scant evidence of the early texts of Italian scripts [1] . The nickname Payatz was not applied to Pierrot, since he was not a servant, but an unfortunate lover.

  • This character, as a rule, did not wear a mask, the actor had a great choice for grimaces and facial expressions, and this tradition was in the game of comedy del arte.
