History
The Beira Mar Sports Club was founded on January 1, 1922 in the city of Aveiro . In addition to football, the club is also known in other sports such as indoor soccer , basketball and boxing . Football is a developing sport club, and Beira Mar is constantly in the top divisions of the Portuguese Championship . The club achieved the best result in the Portuguese League in the 1990–1991 season . But the main achievement of the club is the victory in the Portuguese Cup in 1999 under the leadership of the head coach and former player of the club - António Souza . Beira Mar also participated in the finals of the national cup in 1991, but lost to Porto in extra time. Beira Mar also won the second division three times: in 1961, 1965, 1971, as well as twice the Onra League in the seasons 2005-2006 and 2009-2010. In the 1999–2000 season, the club participated in the UEFA Cup , but dropped out after the first round, losing the two matches to the Dutch Vitesse .
In 1976, Eusebio , the legend of Benfica and Portuguese football, joined the club. Beira Mar fans were very skeptical of a footballer who shone 10 years ago. Eusebio played 12 matches for the club and scored 3 goals.
The club spends home games at the Municipal de Aveiro stadium, which was built for the European Championship in 2003. The stadium was designed by the Portuguese architect Thomas Taveira and seats 30,498 spectators. Fans of the club call the stadium “Circus” for design and vibrant colors. The question of who actually owns the stadium, club or municipality of the city of Aveiro has caused a lot of tension between the two structures, jeopardizing the financing of the club.
In July 2006, Mario Zhardel, two-time winner of the Golden Boot , a football award presented to the top scorer of the national championships of UEFA countries, joined the club . In the first round of the 2006-2007 championship, he spent 12 matches and scored 3 goals, got rid of excess weight and began to gain athletic form. But after the onset of 2007, Zhardel left the club and moved to the Cypriot Anorthosis .
In 2015, due to financial problems, the club was sent to play in a league of Aveiro County (the fifth division of the Portuguese championship), although the previous season finished in 10th place in Segund [1] .
Ultras "Beira Mar" call themselves Ultras Auri-Negros (Yellow-Black).
