The main difference between Motograter and other groups is that they use the so-called “motor grater” - an instrument of their own production, made up of industrial cable and parts of an electric guitar, producing very deep bass sounds. The instrument is a cross between the drums and the bass . At concerts, musicians perform painted charcoal.
The group released two full albums: Motograter (2003), Desolation (2017) and three EPs - Hugh Chardon (1998), Indy (2000), Motograter (2009)

Group History
Indy (1997-2002)
In 1997, Bruce and Joey decided to create a group that would stand out with a unique sound. In the same year, they find a vocalist in the person of Zak Ward (Zak Ward). The group decides to experiment with hardcore sound.
In 1998, at a Halloween party, they meet drummer Chris Beans. He is attracted to the idea of playing unusual music. In the same year, the guys gave their first live performance at the Ventura Theater. As Chris said:
“ There was just a fucking people who wanted to look at us. They were just in a * u. Joey had a great idea to smear himself under the savages, and our bandura played by Bruce made them a * even more. Our show has turned into a hard slam and bashing! ".
After that, they were joined by the last participant - sampler Eric Gonzales. In 2000, the band released their first album Indy . The album is interesting in that it completely lacked guitar parts. In 2001, Neil Godfary joined the group.
In 2002, Godfary, Gonzales and Zach leave the group. They are being replaced by guitarist Matt “Nuke” News and vocalist Ivan “Ghost” Moody.
Motograter (2003-2005)
In 2003, the group released the self-titled album Motograter . It was the band’s first album to use guitars instead of samples. Before starting to record the album, the second guitarist JiAr (born JR) was added to the group, and the returning Zach became backing vocalist. In the summer of that year, "Nuke" leaves the group and Ty Fury joins them.
In the summer of 2004, Aaron (A-Bomb) from Synthetic Delusion joined the band and they began recording a new album. A little later, Zach leaves the group again. The group did not replace him with anyone.
In the fall of 2004, the group went on tour without Bruce and Joey (Smur), leaving Chris as the only permanent member of the group. Instead Motogreiter then had to invite bassist Johnny Neils. Logically, it is worth emphasizing that he played only on tour, until Bruce returned to the group.
In 2005, the group announces a break. Before that, they played a concert in 2006 with Nuke guitarist, Zack, and Bruce on Motogreiter.
New squad
In 2009, it announced a “return” with a “new roster” in Santa Barbara, California. The new lineup also included a bass player playing in parallel with the motor grader. The updated line-up consisted of Nuke and Tyler Hall guitarists, vocalist Angel, bassist Mylon Guy, Twitch on drums, and Bruce on a motorbike. In the same year, Bruce leaves. So, the only person left the group who was in the original composition. Mark Nozler was taken in his place
Initially, the new line-up was called Out Of Curiosity, and they performed cover versions of Motograter songs.
The sound of the “new line-up” could be described as extreme metal , and it went farther and farther away from the Tribal / Aggro-rock of the original Motograter. The group also recorded electronic samples and percussion, inserting them into songs. The use of bass also greatly changed the sound of the songs, as if Motograter would be used simultaneously with it. In September 2011, the group again temporarily ceased operations, but in January 2014 it re-announced itself. There were some changes in the line-up again - Michael Stewart now stood behind Motograiter, Noah Robertson sat at the drums, and Keri Glennon became the new rhythm guitarist. Also, the percussionist Lane Steele was again added to the group. The band played their first concert in three years on February 8, 2014, in Santa Aene, California.
2015 - 2017 Desolation
In the summer of 2015, the group gave an interview in which they talked about their plans: to return to duty and record a second album. A little later, the group announced the start of fundraising for the recording of the album. All financial assistance was provided by fans, fundraising took place on Kickstarter. In the fall of 2015, Motograter began recording material after they had collected the required amount. The release of the album is scheduled for August 11, 2017. The percussionist left the composition, and the current motor-graitor Dustin "Skunk" now plays on it only at live performances. The sound of the collective is now a groove metal with industrial metal.

Interesting Facts
- Interestingly, Motograter (2003) has a song dedicated to one of the great rebels in history.
“ In the song“ No Name, ”says Ivan,“ I got an idea from Mozart. He was buried for some time in an unsigned grave because he rebelled against the politicians of his day. I have always believed this illustrates that one who has the courage to be different is usually condemned. Or buried as he is without a name. "
- The group conducts a certain tribal ritual before each concert.
“ We are warriors,” says Bruce, “when we go on stage we approach it like warriors. We paint our faces with charcoal and meditate before every show. We call it our war paint. We always did it. For us, a show is a place through which we can convey our message. We are like a tribe "
- The song Suffocate from Motograter (2003) was featured on the horror movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 film) .
Motograter Tool
"The original idea for Motograter was to mix bass and drums." Says Butler, who began working with his friend Dave Brogan in 1995. One day, Bruce saw his friend playing the bass that lay on his lap. This inspired him to create Motograter. “I told Joy, We don’t need a bass because we can create our own instrument ourselves!” They bought an old guitar, disassembled it, found a welder (Anthony Paul), and now, the first Motograter is ready, resembling a medieval ironing board with bass strings, and a rusty saw at the same time. They christened it “Motograter” - like blades on tractors, graders. But, although the Motograter made for Joey was much smaller than the later model, so the hardworking duet decided to make the next model from two working cables, which made it easier to play the instrument. Motograter consists of two large industrial cables, through which Bruce pounds with a drumstick and jerks his fingers over them to get different sounds. The tool is L-shaped, where Bruce sits in the center. A machete and other things are also attached to the motogreiter, which are said to be used to create an additional sound.
