They are found in the eastern United States and Canada .
Beetles are painted in bright colors with patterns.
Larvae live and develop in the legs of mushrooms, and also feed on them. Adult beetles live, often in groups, under fallen trees (logs).
Two non-arctic species are referred to the genus:
- Megalodacne fasciata
- Megalodacne heros
