History

During the Civil War, the Chinese Communists were able to confidently settle in the mining areas of Shanxi Province, and on May 4, 1947, the city of Yangcuan, subordinate to the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Soviet district, was allocated from Pindin County. In connection with the success of the Communists and the expansion of the territory under their control, in the summer of 1948 the governing bodies of the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei and Shanxi-Hebei-Henan-Shandong Soviet regions were united (after the capture of Shizhziazhuang their territories were united), and in September 1948 the People’s the government of Northern China, to which Yanquan was directly subordinated.

In 1949, the Yuyi Special (榆次 专区) District of Shanxi Province, consisting of 13 counties, and the Fengyang Special Region (汾阳 专区), consisting of 9 Counties, were formed; Yangquan City, transformed into Yangquan Industrial and Mining District (阳泉 工矿区), became subordinate to the Yuqi Special Region. In 1951, the Fengyang Special District was disbanded, and 6 of its counties were transferred to the Yuqi Special Region; The Yangquan industrial and mining region was transformed into a provincial subordinate Yangquan city. In 1952, Qingyuan and Xuigou were united in Qingxu County; in the same year, the Xingxiang Special District (兴县 专区) was disbanded, and 4 of the counties that were part of it were also transferred to the Yuqi Special Region. In 1954, the Urban District of Yuci County was allocated to the city of Yuci of provincial subordination; Lishan and Fangshan counties were merged into Lishan counties.

In 1958, Yuyi Special District was renamed the Jinzhong Special Region (晋中 专区); at the same time, the cities of Yutsi and Yangquan passed under its jurisdiction, and a number of counties were merged with each other or annexed to these cities, as a result of which there were 2 cities and 7 counties in the Jinzhong Special District. In 1960, part of the counties was restored, and 2 cities and 15 counties became part of the Jinzhong Special District. In 1961, Yangquan once again became a city of provincial subordination, but several more counties were restored, as a result of which one city and 19 counties became part of the Jinzhong Special District. In 1963, the city of Yuqi was transformed into a county, as a result of which the Jinzhong Special District began to consist of 20 counties.

In 1970, the Jinzhong Special District was renamed Jinzhong County (晋中 地区), and Yangquan was demoted to the city of district subordination. In 1971, the city of Yuci was re-formed, and 7 counties were transferred to the Luiliang County (吕梁 地区), as a result of which there were 2 cities and 13 counties in the district. In 1972, Yangquan again became a city of provincial subordination.

In 1983, the Yangquan City District was formed, which included the former Yangquan City (divided into three districts) and two counties from the Jinzhong District.
