In 1949, the Yuci Special District (区 区 区区) was formed, consisting of 13 counties and the Yangquan Industrial Mining District (阳泉 工矿区), and the Fenian Special District (区 汾阳 汾阳), consisting of 9 counties. In 1951, Fenyang Special District was disbanded, and 6 of its counties were transferred to Yucy Special District; At the same time, the industrial-mining region of Yangquan was transformed into the town of Yangquan, a provincial subordination. In 1952, Qingyuan and Xughou were merged into the Qingxu County; In the same year, the Xingxian Special District (区 区 区区) was disbanded, and 4 of the counties that were part of it were also transferred to the Yuci Special District. In 1954, the Urban District of Yuci County was allocated to the town of Yuci of provincial subordination; The counties of Lishi and Fangshan were united into the county of Lishan.
In 1958, the Yucy Special District was renamed the Jinzhong Special District (晋中 专区); at the same time, the towns of Yuce and Yangquan passed under its jurisdiction, and a number of counties were merged with each other or attached to these cities, with the result that there were 2 cities and 7 counties in the Jinzhong Special District. In 1960, part of the counties was restored, and in the Special District of Jinzhong there were 2 cities and 15 counties. In 1961, Yangquan again became a city of provincial subordination, but several more counties were restored, with the result that 1 city and 19 counties became part of the Jinzhong Special District. In 1963, the city of Yuci was transformed into a county, as a result of which the Special District of Yuci began to consist of 20 counties.
In 1970, the Jinzhong Special District was renamed to Jinzhong District (晋中 地区), and Yangquan was demoted to the city of district subordination. In 1971, the city of Yuce was re-formed, and 7 counties were transferred to Liulyang District (吕梁), as a result of which 2 cities and 13 counties became part of the district. In 1972, Yangquan again became a city of provincial subordination.
In 1983, the Yangquan urban district was formed, which included the former Yangquan city (divided into three districts) and two districts from the Jinzhong district.
In 1999, by a resolution of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, the Jinzhong district and the city of Yuci were disbanded, and the city district of Jinzhong was formed; Former city Yucy became a district of urban subordination in its composition.
