This object is one of those listed in the original edition of the New General Catalog .
The galaxy is a satellite of the larger and more massive Messier 60 galaxy. For a long time, there has been debate about whether there is interaction between these galaxies. Despite the fact that they overlap in the sky, active star formation typical of such overlap was not observed. In 2012, using the Hubble telescope , however, it was possible to detect the presence of tidal interaction between these galaxies [1] .
