Career
1984-1989
In 1984, at the age of 16, Petr Korda became the champion of Czechoslovakia among juniors (age category under 18 years). In 1985 he won the youth doubles tournament of the French Open with his compatriot Cyril Sook . In 1986, he won the Wimbledon doubles tournament with Thomas Carbonell and became the European doubles champion with the Bitch. In 1987, in his first year in professional tennis, he reached the semi-finals of the Grand Prix tournament in Kitzbuhel paired with Bitch, and then to the finals of the Grand Prix tournament in Palermo with another compatriot, Tomasz Schmid . Won his first single-player Challenger professional tournament in Budapest . In 1988, after reaching the quarter-finals of the Grand Prix tournament in Munich , Korda became one of the hundred strongest tennis players in singles according to the ATP rating. In pairs, he won the first two Grand Prix tournaments, in Gstaad (with Milan Schreiber ) and Prague , and ended the season with 50 of the best doubles tennis players. From this year, he also played for the Czechoslovak team in the Davis Cup . The following year, for the first time, he reached the final of the Grand Prix tournament in singles, and in pairs he won another Grand Prix tournament and played in the finals three more times, ending the season with 30 strongest paired players.
1990-1993
In 1990, Korda won his first match against a top ten player in world tennis; this happened at a tournament in Philadelphia , where in the quarterfinals he defeated the tenth racket of the world Jay Berger . But he again achieved the main successes in pairs: first he won in Monte Carlo with Schmid the ATP Masters tournament , the most prestigious in the newly formed ATP tour , and then with Goran Ivanishevich reached the finals of the French Open , defeating three seeded couples on the way, in including the first couple of the world, Rick Leach and Jim Pooh . After the French Open, he climbed to 10th place in the doubles ranking.
1991 became more successful for Corda in singles. He played five times in the finals of ATP tournaments and won two of them: in New Haven and Berlin . He won the same tournaments in doubles. During the season, he beat four of the top ten tennis players four times, having won two such victories on the way to the final of the ATP Masters series tournament in Montreal . As a result, by the end of the season he first entered the top ten strongest and singles. In 1992, he won three singles tournaments and, not meeting a single seeded opponent, reached the finals of the French Open, where he lost to the first racket of the world to Jim Courier . At the end of the season, he played in two final tournaments of the year: the ATR World Championship and the Grand Slam ; in both cases did not reach the semifinals, but he finished the season in sixth place in the ranking. In addition, he also reached the final of the World Cup team with the Czech-Slovakian national team , having won five victories in seven singles and doubles matches.
In 1993, Korda won three tournaments in pairs, of which two series, and with Stefan Edberg reached the semi-finals of the French Open. In singles, he reached the quarter finals of the Australian Open and the fourth round of the US Open , winning the right to participate in the Grand Slam Cup for the second year in a row, which he unexpectedly won, consecutively beating Alexander Volkov , Sergi Bruger , Pete Sampras and Michael Stich . This tournament was for Korda the only one won this season in singles.
1994-1998
In 1994 and 1995, Korda did not win a single tournament in both singles and doubles. He reached the finals twice in singles and three times in pairs. By the middle of 1995, although he continued to regularly win in individual matches the representatives of the world tennis elite, he himself sank into the second echelon: at the end of May, he took 60th place in the ranking. In pairs, he spent the second half of 1994 outside the first hundred of the rating.
Korda’s new breakthrough began after hernia removal surgery, which he suffered in previous years, [4] in January 1996, he first won the singles tournament in Doha , and then paired with Edberg won the Australian Open, defeating him on the way two seeded pairs. After this, he reached the final of the team World Cup for the second time in his career, winning four victories in four singles matches and winning two of three matches in pairs; nevertheless, in the final, the Czechs lost to the Swiss . Korda finished the season among the 30 strongest tennis players in the world in both singles and doubles, but his further successes were associated only with singles.
In 1997, Korda reached the finals of the singles four times and won one of them in Stuttgart . After this victory, he returned to the top ten in the ATP rating. 1998 began with two victories in a row: in Doha and the Australian Open, after which it climbed to second place in the ranking. He reached the finals of the Team World Cup for the third time, winning three of four matches (all in singles). During the season, he could take the first line in the ranking four times, but he never managed to realize this opportunity.
During the 1998 Wimbledon tournament, a prohibited drug, nandrolone, was found in Corda's urine test. At the end of the year, Korda, who claimed that he did not take nandrolone, was disqualified by the ITF for a year, but after the period of disqualification expired, he could not resume full participation in the competition and ended his tennis career. As of 2009, Korda lived in Bradenton , Florida , USA , and coached his compatriot Radek Stepanek . [6]
