Jilted John
The single "Jilted John", recorded by producer Martin Hannett and styled as pop punk in the spirit of Buzzcocks , was first played on the radio in the program of John Peel , who noticed that if a major label took on the promotion, the single would certainly become a hit. This happened when the single was “picked up” by EMI International and soon rose to # 4 in the UK Singles Chart .
The plot of the song (in which the main character complains that the girl left him to Gordon, who looks better in every respect), was dramatized: “Gordon” was played by Bernard Kelly (Fellows acquaintance from the theater college), he also appeared in the program Top of the Pops . Show host David Jensen introduced Julted John as "one of the strangest singles of the decade."
Kelly also co-authored the b-side, “Going Steady,” a song that Rabid Records originally regarded as the A-side single.
In the same year, two more singles were released, already under the guise of Gordon the Moron. They were followed by a pseudo-concept album, recorded with producer Hannett, True Love Stories , which described John's romantic adventures. Two singles from it were not included in the charts. But success had the badges with the inscriptions: "Gordon is a moron" and "Gordon is not a moron." Moreover, subsequently this phrase was used in a political context, in relation to the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown [3]
John Shuttleworth
In 1986, Fellows created a new character, John Shuttleworth, a promising top ten author from Sheffield. One of the songs of his hero, "Pigeons in Flight", Fellows unsuccessfully tried to make among the contenders for the Eurovision Song Contest .
In 2008, Fellows appeared again as Jilted John at The Big Chill. Together with Bernard Kelly, he performed a new song, the subject of study of which were the features of the figure of Keira Knightley . Also known for his radio shows The Shuttleworths , Shuttleworth's Showtime and Radio Shuttleworth , where Fellows performed all roles and played on his organ.
It's Nice Up North.
In 2004, Fellows (like Shuttleworth) with photographer Martin Parr created the film It's Nice Up North , which developed the theory that the British are more comfortable in communicating with the north they live - the journey ended on the northernmost part of the Shetland Islands . In the summer of 2007, the second part of the study, Southern Softies, was released, stating that the softness of a national character increases as you move south.
