Saint Hallvard was the son of the Norwegian aristocrat Webjörn of Husabi ( Huseby (Lier) ). His mother was acquainted with St. Olaf , the patron saint of Norway. Little is known about his life; all biographical data are associated with his death. Hallvard defended the life of a woman, most likely a slave who was granted asylum on his ship. This woman was accused of theft by the crew of the ship. Defending the life of an innocent man, Hallvard, mortally wounded, was killed along with the accused woman. Having tied the dead Hallward to the millstone, the killers tried to drown the body in the sea near the Drammen fjord , but it did not sink. As a result, Hallward's murder was uncovered.
Hallward veneration arose in the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages. He is considered the protector of innocent people. In 1130, a cathedral was built in Oslo, bearing his name, where his relics were stored. By the XVII century, this cathedral fell into decay, and from it at present only ruins remain.
