Isabella Bourbon-Parma was the eldest daughter of the Spanish infante Philip and the daughter of Louis XV of Louise-Elizabeth . Isabella loved music, played the violin and was fond of books on philosophy and theology. She was often haunted by thoughts of death, especially after the death of her mother in 1759 . On October 6, 1760, the princess was married to the heir to the Austrian throne, Archduke Joseph . Isabella became a close friend of his sister Maria Christina . The surviving correspondence of Isabella and Maria Christina speaks of their deep affection (only letters from Isabella survived).

Isabella had a daughter, Maria Theresa ( 1762 - 1770 ), who died of pneumonia . In 1762 and 1763, she suffered two miscarriages, which worsened her state of health and caused deep depression. On November 22, 1763, Isabella prematurely gave birth to a daughter, who was named Maria Cristina: she lived only a few hours. Isabella was ill with smallpox at that moment and died a few days later.

After the death of his wife, Joseph did not want to enter into a second marriage; his mother forced him to marry Maria Joseph of Bavaria , whom he disliked and did not even attend her funeral.
