NGC 4388

NGC 4388 (other designations are UGC 7520 , MCG 2-32-41 , ZWG 70.68 , VCC 836 , IRAS12232 + 1256 , PGC 40581 ) is a spiral galaxy ( Sb ) in the constellation Virgo . About 60 million light-years from Earth are located. This object is one of those listed in the original edition of the New General Catalog . Galaxy NGC 4388 is classified as active, as it has a bright active nucleus.

The galaxy is interesting in that it emits huge dust clouds (up to 100 thousand light-years in size). There are two hypotheses of their origin:

  • Gas was torn out of galaxy NGC 4388 during its passage through the Virgo cluster.
  • This is the remnant of a small galaxy destroyed by NGC 4388.
