History
Despite the fact that these lands were inhabited from ancient times, until the middle of the 20th century they were not united by a single administrative unit.
In 1949, the Hengshui Special District (衡水 专区) was formed, which included 13 counties. In 1952, it was disbanded, and 3 counties were transferred to Shandong Province , 6 to the Shijiazhuang Special District (石家庄 专区), 3 to the Qangxian Special District (沧县 专区), and 1 to the Xingtai Special District (邢台 专区). In 1962, the Hengshui Special District was recreated - this time in 11 counties. In 1970, the Hengshui Special District was renamed to Hengshui County (衡水 地区). In 1982, the village of Hengshui was raised in status to a city county.
In May 1996, by the decision of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, the Henshui District was transformed into the Hengshui City District, and the territory of the former Henshui City County became the Taochen district in its composition.
In 2016, Jizhou City County was transformed into an urban submission area.
