The Carolina Grebe [1] , or the colorful beak [2] ( lat. Podilymbus podiceps ) is a species of water bird from the grebe family ( Podicipedidae ).

Appearance and lifestyle
The length of the Carolina toadstool reaches 31–38 cm, weight - 253–568 g, wingspan - 45–62 cm. Brown and gray tones predominate in the color. In summer, a broad strip of black appears on the beak (hence the name). Sexual dimorphism is not observed.
Rarely flies, in danger prefers to dive under water. The Carolina toadstool feeds mainly on aquatic invertebrates , sometimes small tailless amphibians .
The most common of the American grebes - found on both American continents from southern Canada to southern Patagonia . It is absent in Alaska and in the northern part of Canada, as well as in the Amazon and the highlands of the Andes [3] . It lives mainly in freshwater bodies of water - ponds , swamps , streams . It is rare in salt ponds.
