Biography

Doda came from a noble family and was probably the daughter of Arnoald , Bishop of Metz . From the wife of Arnulf, Doda gave birth to two sons:

  • Chlodulf (? - 697 ) - Bishop Metz from 657 to 697
  • Anzegisel (? —About 679 ) is the ancestor of the Carolingian .

When Arnulf was elected Bishop of Metz in 614 and, as a bishop, could not be married, Doda went to a monastery in Trier .

Sources

The first “Life of St. Arnulf,” compiled in the middle of the 7th century , does not name the name of the saint’s wife, being content to consider her “a very noble girl”. The name appears only in the X century , when the monk Ummo, the author of the second “Life of St. Arnulf,” calls her Doda and clarifies that she went to the monastery of Trier after her husband was elected bishop of Metz. In the XI century, “The Life of Chlodulf” also calls this name and clarifies that “there were no more famous and more noble parents” than she and her husband Arnulf.

Exploring Sources

Many historians, including Eduard Glavichka , considered that Saint Arnulf had no wife with the name Oda (Dod), but there was a displacement: Arnulf's mother, Saint Oda, and later scribes mistakenly considered him his wife.

In The Life of Arnulf, written by Ummo in accordance with the generally accepted genealogy of St. Arnulf, Commemoratio genealogia domni Arnulfi episcopi and confessoris Christi , Arnulf is mentioned as the son of Arnoald , whose aunt is named Doda. To enter this name as the name of the wife of Arnulf means to make it clear about the existence of kinship between the spouses in the era when the Church was very careful about the degree of kinship of the spouses. There is, therefore, no real reason to reject this later evidence.

During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, historical science revised the validity of Commemoratio . A critical study showed that Saint Arnulf was probably Arnoald’s son-in-law. It follows that Doda was the daughter of Arnoald, that he gave the name of his daughter by the name of his aunt, and the possible granddaughter of Doda, Clotilde (Doda) , the wife of King Theodorich III , was in turn named after her.
