Physical Characteristics
This galaxy is one of the largest and brightest in the Virgo Cluster . Its absolute magnitude is approximately β22 (that is, it is brighter than the Andromeda galaxy ). Like other spiral galaxies of this cluster, NGC 4216 shows a low content of free hydrogen in its disk, and also has a low surface density, which is not typical for galaxies of this type. Also, the galaxy is characterized by low activity in the formation of stars. The disk of the galaxy contains pillar-like structures that probably appeared as a result of interaction with neighboring galaxies.
The galaxy NGC 4216 is surrounded by almost 700 small spherical star clusters (this is almost five times larger than the Milky Way ), which indicates that in this part of the cluster there is a process of active destruction and absorption of dwarf galaxies.
