History
In 341, the city of Longcheng (龙城) was built on these lands as the capital of the state of Early Yan .
During the time of the Ming Empire, these lands were subject to various border guards. During the time of the Qing Empire in the western part of these lands, the Tazigogu Commissariat (塔 子沟 厅) was created in 1738, and the Sanju Juanta Commissariat (三座 ас 厅) in the east, in 1774, was established. In 1778 both commissariats were liquidated, and instead of them two districts were created: in the western part - Jianchang county, and in the eastern part - Chaoyang county (named after Chaoyandung cave on Fenghuangshan Mountain), subordinated to the Chengde administrative council (承德 府). In 1904, a separate Chaoyang government (朝阳 府) was created, under the jurisdiction of which Chaoyang county was transferred. After the Xinhai Revolution in China, the administrative division structure was reformed, during which the governing councils were liquidated, and these counties became part of the Rehe Special Administrative Region, which was transformed into Rehe Province in 1928.
In 1933, Jeho Province was captured by the Japanese and annexed to the puppet state of Manchukuu . In 1940, Jianchang County was liquidated, and its lands were incorporated into the Kharachin-Tsoi Hoshun, the Chaoyang County was converted to Hoshun Tamed-Yutsi, Jianping County - into the Hoshun-Kharachin-Yutsi district, and Beipiao County - into the Hoshong Toumed-Zhongqi district; Khoshuni Tumed Yutsi and Toumed Zhongqi became part of Jinzhou Province, while Khoshuns Kharachin-Tsoi and Kharachin Yutsi remained in the province of Jehe.
After the end of the Second World War and the liquidation of Manzhou-go, the pre-war administrative division was restored. During the civil war, this land since 1947 came under the lasting control of the Communists. In 1955, Jeho Province was liquidated and these lands became part of the Special District of Jinzhou (区 专) in Liaoning Province. In 1958, the Jinzhou Special District was disbanded, and five counties and Kharachin-Tsoi-Mongol Autonomous County were transferred to the jurisdiction of Chaoyang City, which was separated from Chaoyang County. In 1964, the Chaoyang City was disbanded, and its territory was incorporated into the Chaoyang County; The Chaoyang Special District (区 专区) was formed from 5 counties and 1 autonomous county, whose authorities were located in the territory of Chaoyang county. In 1970, the Chaoyang Special District was renamed Chaoyang District (朝阳).
In 1980, the urbanized part of Chaoyang County was re-allocated to Chaoyang City.
By the Resolution of the State Council of China on June 30, 1984, the Chaoyang District was disbanded, and the Chaoyang District was formed instead of it; the territory of the former city of Chaoyang became the areas of Shuant and Longcheng in its composition. In 1985, Beipiao County was transformed into a city county.
In 1989, Jinxi City District was formed, and Jianchang County was transferred from Chaoyang City District to Jinxi City District.
On December 21, 1991, Lingyuan County was transformed into a city county.
