Layba

Laiba , fin. laiva - the local name for wooden sailing ships of the Baltic basin with one or two masts for the transport of non-urgent cargo. Displacement from 50 to 400 tons , type of sailing weapons - iol or schooner . Engines were not used until the 1920s. A crew of 3 to 5 people, usually Finns , as the latter were well aware of the skerry fairways in the Baltic. Used until the Second World War in local irregular transportation of goods. Main ports: Petersburg , Vyborg , Kronstadt (coastal harbor), Abo , Revel , Stockholm .
