The group performed a politicized post-punk with acutely social, satirical texts in which it expressed socialist ideas. “We are not a socialist ensemble. We are a group of socialists who have assembled an ensemble. This is a subtle distinction, but very important ” [3] ,” said in a press release from The Three Johns.

Seven singles of the group and three albums of Three Johns were included in the first twenty of the UK Indie Chart . The debut Atom Drum Bop , released on Abstract Records in 1984 (under the motto: “Rock and Roll Against Thatcherism” on the cover) rose to # 2, followed two years later by The World By Storm and rose to the 4th on indie lists places [4] . The group recorded six radio sessions for John Peel on BBC Radio 1. The song "Death of the European" took 14th place on his 1985 list of Festive Fifty (Best Songs) [5] .

Over the years the group has existed, its members basically refused to become rock professionals: Langford continued to work as a graphic designer, and Hyatt continued to teach at the Leeds Polytechnic Institute [3] .

In 1988, after the unsuccessful American tour, The Three Johns broke up, in 1990 they reformed, released Eat Your Sons (a conceptual album about cannibalism ) and broke up again [6] . Langford continued to collaborate with The Mekons and later released a solo album, Hyatt focused on academic activities [6] .
