Childhood. Family Steiner
Cary Stayner, like many other serial killers, had a difficult childhood. He was born in a large family, where, besides him, there were three more sisters and younger brother Stephen Steiner, with whom Carey shared one room. Their father, Delbert Steiner, worked as a technician at a cannery. During the harvest, he went to work six times a week, and his shift lasted for 18 hours, so Steyner's mother, Kay, was mainly engaged in raising children. When Kay was in elementary school, her parents sent her to a Catholic boarding school, where she was subjected to physical and emotional abuse. Perhaps because of this, she rarely showed affection for her own children. She only cared that they were fed and clothed, but she never showed any special tenderness.
At the age of three, Carey was treated for obsessive mental disorder - he was pulling his hair out. When he was arrested, this disorder will happen again.
Stephen Steiner
In 1972, child molester Kenneth Parnell kidnapped Carey 's younger brother, Stephen Steiner . Only seven years later, Stephen managed to escape and return home. He remembered his parents, but did not recognize his brother and sisters. “I think it hurt Cary,” said the Steiner neighbor, Michael Kolmen.
“We were not on good terms after he returned. Steve received gifts, clothes, attention ... I think I was jealous. You could say I was relegated to second place, ”said Carey. According to the memories of a neighbor, once Kay laid the dinner table and returned to the stove. Stephen noticed that she forgot to install another device. “To whom?” She asked. Stephen pointed to his brother. "Oh, yes, Cary ..." said the mother.
Another Steiner neighbor, Victoria, said that Carey was very upset about all the attention Stephen received. At that time, Carey drew in nude girls notebooks. He talked about how in his fantasies kills people. Often he had outbursts of anger. He also swore that he saw the Snowman.
In 1979, classmates recognized him as the most creative in the class. Many thought that he could become an artist or a multiplier. But he remained known as the brother of a kidnapped child.
In 1997, Steiner got a job as a master at a motel not far from Yosemite National Park .
Killings
In February 1999, Carey Steiner passed by the tourist house of Yosemite National Park. Through the window he saw that two girls were watching TV, and a woman was reading. Their house was located away from others, and no one would have heard their screams. Steiner convinced Carol Sand that he came to check if the bath was leaking. She let him in and he fired a gun. The bodies of those killed were found in the trunk of their rented car, burned in the forest, more than a month after they disappeared. Meanwhile, Carey committed the fourth kill.
Carey Steiner was interrogated by the police about the first three murders and released because he was not a serious suspect. However, when the fourth body was found, he was interrogated again. Carey’s truck was searched, and the investigators found evidence in him that it was Stayner who killed the fourth victim. After this, Kary Steiner admitted that it was he who killed all four women.
Arrest and Court
When his case was sent to court, Cary Stainer did not plead guilty, citing mental disorder. However, he was found to be sane, and the jury convicted him in 2001 on four counts of aggravated murders. In 2002, Steiner was sentenced to death.
Steiner's appeal is now pending.
