The construction of the cathedral lasted almost three hundred years , from 1083 to 1375 . Earlier on this site was a church founded in the 7th century by Saint Etheldreda (she is also known as Saint Audrey ) along with a monastery destroyed in the 9th century by the Vikings . The construction of the cathedral itself was begun by the local abbot Simeon . The Anglo-Saxon church was destroyed, but its relics were preserved and later transferred to the cathedral. The central tower is the oldest part of the cathedral, the western tower was built in 1174 - 1197 . The older parts of the cathedral are made in the Romanesque style . The later elements of the building date back to early English Gothic . In 1321 - 1349 , a chapel was attached to the north side.
The height of the western tower is 66 m , the length of the cathedral is 163 m, of which the length of the nave , which still remains the longest in the UK, is 75 m. An octagonal lighting tower with a height of 52 m rises above the center of the cathedral. [3]
When the monasteries were abolished by Henry VIII, the cathedral suffered relatively little damage, although the statues in the chapel and the tomb of Etheldreda were seriously damaged. By 1541, the cathedral was restored.
In the 17th century, Matthew Wren became bishop of Eli, the uncle of the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren , who designed the Gates in the 1650s on the north side of the Gates .
Many famous people are buried in the cathedral:

- Hugo Northolds - Bishop of Or XIII Century
