Gargulia , also gargouil ( fr. Gargouille , [ ɡaʁ.ɡuj ]) and gorgoula - in Gothic architecture: a stone or metal issue of gutter , most often sculpted in the form of a grotesque character (sometimes a multi-figure plot) and designed for effective drainage from the drain vertical surfaces below the roof overhang. Garguyle [1], strongly perpendicular to the wall, is a characteristic element of the silhouette of many large buildings of the medieval West, as well as one of the motifs in the Gothic reminiscences of eclecticism , modernism and art deco , where its function is often exclusively decorative.
The expressiveness of this detail, its unusual composition (in fact, a reclining statue) and the obvious plot mismatch of the doctrinal themes of the central sculptural ensembles of Gothic churches led to the attention that garguyli attracted from the time of the awakening of interest to the "medieval" in the first half of the XIX century. In post-classical Europe, the images of these minor architectural elements turned out to be in demand both as a key for interpreting the very phenomenon of the Middle Ages, and for all kinds of semantic comparisons in the context of modern civilization. Already in the 20th century in science fiction and cinema, and after them in popular culture in general, the concept was reinterpreted in such a way that it began to denote not a functional element of the structure, but the character itself, sculptured in stone as to ensure organized water discharge from the roof, and outside this function. The projection of this view is a mixture of concepts of the gargoyle and chimera , as well as the false assumption of the existence in the system of medieval Western European teratology of demonic gargoyles (otherwise - gargoyles ) [2] , images of which were allegedly placed on the eaves of buildings, for example, to scare evil spirits. In the extreme manifestations of this semantic transformation, which gained momentum with the spread of fashion to the fantasy genre, even the idea of any connection with the sculptural prototype may be lost. In modern usage, gargoyles often mean semi-anthropomorphic (usually winged) demonic creatures that appear in fantastic plots, and can be used as a metaphor for physical deformity.
Etymology, spelling and usage of the term
The French word gargouille [3] is a compound. Its first part is garg- related to the late Latin verb gargarizare , dating back to ancient Greek. γαργαρίζω - “rinse”. With regard to this root, its onomatopoeic character is affirmed, imitating the murmur of water [4] . The second root is a variation of the word gueule (Art. Fr. goule, from Lat. Gula) - “throat”.
The form of a rgul (see below ), rarely attributable to the original (architectural-building) meaning of the word, is not traced in authoritative foreign language sources, but, of course, resulted from a rapprochement with the French. either English gorge - “throat”, “pharynx” (which is symptomatic, since in this case the word contains an internal tautology ) and, possibly, under the influence of the name Gorgon .
In modern Russian, this concept lacks a single stable spelling. The most common form of the gargoyle covers the whole range of meanings, while the garguyle and the gargoyle show a tendency towards polarization: in the first case, a term from the history of architecture [5] is always implied, in the second, as a rule, a fantastic character [6] . Other options (there are writing gargoyle , gargoyle , gargulia , etc.) today do not form a language norm and form local subcultural traditions, grouped around thematic Internet forums .
Despite the etymology of the word and the binding of the original concept to a specific functional purpose, there is currently an expansion of the meanings of the corresponding English term, which seeks to embrace the entire Romantic-Gothic round plastic (also quasi -Gothic , neo-Gothic and other derivatives of the Gothic art systems) fantastic character - on the one hand , - and any artistically designed device for diverting water, regardless of cultural and stylistic affiliation, on the other [7] . Through the translation of texts English. gargoyle influences the Russian analogue, then it becomes possible to conclude that the term is used, for example, in relation to ancient water cannons, often decorated with macaroons , as well as to sculptural images of chimeras [8] . At the same time, a number of reference publications [9] caution against confusing these concepts, indicating the chronological and functional limitations of the term “gargoyle”. In Russian, stylistically neutral terms denoting similar building elements are the concepts of “water drainage” (in the professional construction slang the pluralist form has the form of release ), “weir” [10] (often just “plums”), “water cannon”.
The Miracle of St. Roman Rouen
Garguyle appears as a proper name in the local myth of St. Roman , Bishop of Rouen ( VIIth century), long before the construction term appeared. According to the legend [11] , a monster dwelling in the lower reaches of the Seine , called La Gargouille [12] .
It should be noted that this name originated according to the same model as the construction term - from the verb gargouiller with the meaning of gurgling, grumbling, mumbling, chattering, like the names of other monsters of the local urban mythologies of France [13] , is nothing more than a mocking nickname [14] , which could be translated as "Splashing" or "The Strip" [15] , cf. Grand 'Gueule (or Grand 'Goule) from Poitiers means only the “Great Mouth” (see gueule ), Graoully (aka Graouli, Graouilly, Graouilli, Graully) from Metz is raised to it. graulich - “terrible, terrible”, Chair Salée from Troyes means “Corned beef”. Rouen Gargouille is all the more lonely because you can find beasts with the names Gargelle, Garagoule (this her namesake lived in Provence ) - all from the same “throat”. Interestingly, according to the same model, Rabelais compiled the names of his Granguze, Gargameli and Gargantua [16] . The annoying alliteration of the majority of these names, varying the same consonance, attracts attention [17] .
This whole range of names suggests that there is some kind of common model of the familiar naming of the folklore monsters of the early French Middle Ages - a model that could be replicated when the architectural term appeared a century later [18] . Neither the localization of the myth [19] , nor the way in which the character's name is formed — the name in which its genesis is clearly traced [20] —is the same as the term, allows us to speak of the direct continuity of the name of the engineering detail of the Rouen La Gargouille. "Garguyle".
History and features of functioning
The appearance of the garguyli is synchronous to the appearance in the structure of the wall of the crowning gutter, whose element it is. Gutters, widely used in ancient architecture (see Sims ), were not used in the Romanesque era and returned in the middle of the 13th century. as an innovation of the Gothic [21] . The small removal of the eaves, which distinguishes medieval architecture from order , required developed protrusions of drainage mouths to protect the masonry from destruction due to contact with water. This explains, in addition, the setting of the garguyle at the points of the structure moved away from the walls - for example, on the edge of the buttresses and in the corners of the towers.
The early, rather massive model, found in the Notre-Dame cathedral of the city of Lahn , is made up of two halves - the chute itself and the lid - forming together a zoomorphic figure [22] . Soon, however, construction thought required abandoning large garguyleys that collect water from a large area of roofing, in favor of lighter, evenly spaced along the length of the channel, in this case the rainwater flow was divided into many thin jets, less dangerous for the preservation of the structure, and the sculpture has tended to be more sophisticated [22] . A type of garguyli from roofing iron, tin, or lead soon emerged — especially in demand where the stone was expensive or ineffective in its properties, particularly in the regions where brick Gothic was spread [23] .
Despite the fact that in some cases the system of collecting precipitations in the composition of the Gothic structure is very perfect and may include several successive elements (for example, grooves and intermediate garguyles cascading water onto transverse troughs along the top of arc-butans [24] ), in the absence of solutions of vertical water descent to the blind area , remains semi-organized drainage system. Plastering facades, which are especially sensitive to wetness, cannot be sufficiently protected by this system. It is believed that in 1240 , when the donjon of the London Tower was whitewashed, lead drainpipes were first installed on it [25] . In the Renaissance , when the triumph of ancient aesthetics in architecture led to an almost universal decline or significant transformation of national building traditions and schools, the previously thoughtful rainwater drainage system degraded: now the overhang of the roof, supported by an entablature with a strongly protruding cornice, no longer threatened the walls with dampness, water due to dripping device drip edge (solid suspended downwards along the groove surface of the ledge which prevents the capillary flow of water towards the wall) or protrusion roofings th material (tile, slate, iron). Together with the gutter along the perimeter of the roof, the Garguil also disappears. When at the end of the XVII century. a gutter [26] returns, it is most often already a roofing element (technologically and aesthetically), rather than a wall, and is connected with an organized vertical drainage system (drainpipe).
Sculptural Decoration
Contrary to popular belief, garguyli were performed not only teraTomorphic (all sorts of dragons and chimeras) and zoomorphic (monkeys, lions, wolves, dogs, goats, pigs, birds, fish, etc.), but also anthropomorphic (for example, monks, clowns, mermaids ) character. Sometimes a garguyle is a whole plot that unites two or more characters (for example, a demon riding a sinner [27] , a snake wrapping around a tree trunk). Always individual (it is argued that in the whole of France there are no two identical [27] ), the Garguilis eventually accumulate a range of thematic variations and often reach a high artistic level. The set of plots becomes especially wide in the Late Gothic era .
The most common characteristic of the sculptural processing of the garguyle is the infernality of the depicted characters, which is not sensed by the romantic imagination, but their correlation with the profane (that is, the unholy) world — along with the visionary scenes, there are quite real ones observed in everyday life or reflecting the themes of folk comedians . In an era when secular culture was not yet an independent system of views and themes (see below: Sin or “adiaphorus”? ), The latter were grouped on the periphery of the world view and supplied plots for the processing of elements unloaded with symbolic meanings, like garguyli, excluded from cosmogonic narrative of the cathedral.
It should be noted that the garguyle may not have sculptural processing at all: everywhere where this element is not visible from important viewing points, it is solved by minimal means: even in the Notre Dame de Paris, the set of garguyle are simple trays of stone hewn [28] .
As an element with conflict tectonics , especially in relation to the harmonious images of the Renaissance , garguyle is inconvenient, but still necessary detail in such monuments of a transitional era, such as, for example, the Parisian church of St. Eustache , with the general Gothic structure, details are interpreted in renaissance forms. Here, the Garguyli are modestly resolved in the form of flat consoles with volutes (however, in some cases they were animated by a zoomorphic character, but this time giving rise rather to bucolic associations) or as some similarities of overturned obelisks - obviously, there was less and less space as part of the new artistic program of this utility part . Not considered more as an architectural element requiring special plastic processing, the drain has ceased to be an artistic problem, now referring to the engineering periphery of the project. In the Gothic monuments themselves, where the Garguyli remained one of the most vulnerable parts, in modern times, the replacement of worn fragments was carried out using the simplest solutions — pipes and trays [29] .
With the end of the Napoleonic epic amid disappointment in the universalistic hopes of the Enlightenment and satiation with internationally classical images in Europe, interest in local artistic traditions aroused. Romanticism and the rise of local nationalism for the first time forced the educated strata to pay attention to the monuments of the Middle Ages and provoked, in particular, the study and attempts to reproduce the techniques of Gothic architecture. However, the new epoch approached the Gothic with its own standards - the nineteenth-century historicism was completely alien to the medieval confusion of plots of the sacred and profane. The New Age artist, whose sole authorship does not allow semantic digressions in the whole program of the project, conducts a harmonious “monologue” of a particular idea in it, perceiving Gothic as a decorative “theme”, historical style with a certain system of composition rules. Accordingly, the sculpture solves here the same tasks as any other element of the artistic whole. In such buildings, the sculptural solution of the Garguilah may lose its historically inherent profanity or traversing character, continuing the graphic series of “serious” statues and reliefs [30] .
On the contrary, in the works of such artistic trends as modern or postmodernism , historical experience is perceived as a kind of free tuning fork or a theme for a game in which the author’s fantasy considers itself completely free. For example, the Sagrada Familia of Barcelona demonstrates a programmatic departure from the traditional facade and interior plastics, but since in its design and composition this church inherits precisely the gothic experience, its details also play with the techniques of the Gothic architecture, although their plastic processing is already quite far from historical prototypes . Placed on the buttresses of the choir , garguyli are settled here at the intersection of tradition and innovation: the “classic” zoomorphism of this detail is represented by such unexpected images as the snail, the snake, the lizard.
The value of images. Attitudes of Contemporaries
Not participating in the work of the cathedral’s supporting structure (as well as of any other building) and being a functionally auxiliary component, Garguil also remained a narrative marginal in its visual ensemble, free from Old Testament and Evangelical didactics of central sculptural compositions. But in today's opinion, the presence in the ensemble of a church of images that are not directly related to the doctrinal theme presents a problem. Not being placed in ideologemes translated by church art, these plots and characters require either unorthodox interpretations of the medieval worldview and aesthetics (for example, allowing them to have a strong magic element), or weakening the semantic load on these parts as such (or at least least their connection with the figurative catechism of temple architecture). In any case, the meaning of the motifs depicted in garguyle sculpture can only be reconstructed in the context of their perception by generations that have witnessed the appearance of these monuments themselves.
Mirabilia mundi?
To reconcile the garguyle sculpture with the Christian canon turns out to be the most natural in the framework of the universalistic concept of the cathedral as an “encyclopedia in stone”: universe miracles ( cf.-lat. Mirabilia mundi ) reflected in this case the infinity of creation. As a central public place, the large city cathedral with its sculptural decoration for a long time remained for the parishioners a , but also a library of knowledge in general. Moral studies here could organically coexist with entertainment, images of the Apocalypse - with a historical chronicle, the Gospel story - with a bestiary . This view, which is convenient in that it allows us to assume for medieval people a close understanding of the artistic ensemble of the building as a coherent whole, was already formulated in the 19th century.
Why, then, on the facades of buildings, including our large cathedrals, do we so often meet these creatures - real and fictional? Here it is worth remembering what we have said earlier about the inclination of the secular genre that erected these buildings, to see in them a sort of outline of the universe, an authentic cosmos , an encyclopedia containing the whole of creation - and not only by an idea, but in a completely consistent incarnation .
Like the monsters on the edges of geographical maps marking the unknown seas and lands, fantastic images in the exterior of cathedrals are involved in shaping the picture of the universe, on the periphery of which there are miracles. However, even such a “cosmological” explanation turns out to be too narrow if we bear in mind the whole range of motifs used in the processing of garguyle: dogs, monks and acrobats do not explicitly suggest associations with images of the universal cunstkamera.
Mystical guards?
At the same time, the modern view of the architecture of any epoch, which requires a coherent semantic program in all its parts, provokes attempts to more closely integrate these images into the single iconographic context of the cathedral, uniquely define their role, justify from the point of view of the supposed conformity of the architectural structure to the ideological whole [ 32] . And although individual ensembles may indeed suggest the existence of such a program (for example, the garguyli basilica of Saint-Denis , depicting sins [33] ), it is impossible to generalize the whole phenomenon on the basis of the observed breadth of the range of motifs used (see above: Sculptural decoration ). The naive interpretation of this interpretation is the point of view, according to which the sculptures of garguylei embody the images of the mystical guards of the building — tame hellish creatures, “their” demons, who prevent the penetration of the real forces of the underworld (see below: Gargoyles ).
In addition, the assumption of the apotropic function of garguyleys would in fact correspond to the anti-historical assumption of the widespread form of idolatry and magic in Europe in the Middle Ages. It can be noted that even in a later era, when magic classes acquired a relatively high status compared to the marginal role they played during the heyday of the Gothic, [34] rarely penetrate the plastic arts (especially into architecture) and are represented completely different range of images associated with the concepts of Hermeticism , Kabbalah and Astrology . As for the need for metaphysical protection, to her - both in this and in subsequent periods - was largely answered by another, much more common institution - the cult of saints .
Fear or laughter?
Apparently, the plot independence of the Garguyli for the human consciousness of the Middle Ages inconvenient for explanations seemed neither flawed nor overly bold, just as modern taste does not require the stylistic connection of a commercial sign with the architecture of the wall on which it is located. Obviously, this composition was pushed towards independence by a mass with a side mount that would have developed horizontally, which would hardly correspond to pious scenes, because it is rather an overturned statue, and the way of functioning: the flowing water turned the sculpture into a kind of visual attraction. The latter aspect also calls into question the validity of the spiritualistic readings of these figures: as shown by Mikhail Bakhtin , images of physiological eruption ( vomiting , defecation ), as well as swallowing and any other forms of bodily communication that violate the integrity, sovereignty, closeness of the subject, belong to the frivolous, carnival world, therefore, the basis of their perception in the Middle Ages was a ridiculous principle. According to Bakhtin, “the medieval and Renaissance grotesque , associated with the folk culture of laughter , knows the terrible only in the form of ridiculous monsters” [35] . The etymology of the word (see below, Etymology, spelling and usage of the term ) indicates the detracting nature of these architectural elements, forcing them to be thought of as being comic-based (at least in Romance countries, where the terms gargouille , gargola , etc.) ., preserving connotations with the concept of pharynx , have a distinct grotesque flavor [36] ). However, later cultural historians indicate that laughter and fear equally characterize the worldview of medieval society [37] . In any case, the question of the perception of these sculptures by people of the Middle Ages can only be resolved from a broader perspective of the reconstruction of their relationship to the fantastic and the grotesque.
Sin or “ adiaphor ”?
The essential distinction of the medieval consciousness from the modern is the non-demarcation of the sacred and the secular, since these categories themselves did not exist and the phenomena associated with them were not divorced as opposed to each other [38] . The invasion of the mundane was not seen in the Middle Ages as an encroachment on the sphere of the sacred, as evidenced by countless examples from the field of plastic arts [39] .
This phenomenon illustrates that feature of medieval culture, which distinguishes it from later eras, that there was no aesthetic canon in it that rejected semantic syncretism in the artistic whole. Obviously, the sculptural plots of the garguyle, in most cases, have nothing to do with the general buildings, and in the cathedral, town hall or castle they could be anything. The building, as an organ , employs all graphic and semantic registers, addresses all relevant topics. The beautiful endures beside the ugly just as the sacred - the profane. The rejection of these themes was transmitted more from the standpoint of the statement about the harm they cause of idle curiosity ( cf.-lat. Curiositas ) among monks who devote themselves to reading sacred texts than from assumptions about the insult of their very neighborhood with the altars. This is evidenced, in particular, by the famous passage of St. Bernard Klervosky (XII century) about the sculpture in the Romanesque era, which shows an example of extreme rigidity in this matter:
... But why in the monasteries, before the eyes of the reading brothers, this ridiculous outlandishness, these strangely ugly images, these ugly images?

Since the XIX century.
Heroes of Might and Magic
Гаргульи также присутствуют в играх Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos и Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne , где обладают способностью обращаться в камень, чтобы быстрее исцелиться от ран.

Notes

Viollet-le-Duc, 1868 , p. 28).

Michael Kemill, exploring in detail the transformation of medieval fantasy images in the perception of people of the 19th — 20th centuries, regarding the Gothic era proper, is certain that the presence of demonic characters in the exterior of buildings illustrates their expulsion from its limits, see Camille, 2009 , pp. 17–18; 94; 97; 338

- ↑ The Middle Ages ’rogue lot, magic in the Renaissance often becomes theory and practice in the framework of individual experiences of near-religious philosophy and — among the less odious intellectual quest of the new century — sometimes even honored by the supreme spiritual authorities of the Catholic Church — is inconceivable for the Middle Ages. From the first half of the XVII century. the development of the Cartesian rationalism of the New time again marginalizes these studies.
