History

In 1916, the Department of Chemistry was organized at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of St. Petersburg State University, where the teaching of higher mathematics, thermodynamics, physical chemistry was introduced, the courses of the main branches of chemistry were also significantly expanded, all this served in the further creation and establishment of the Faculty of Chemistry [1] [2] [3] .

The Faculty of Chemistry was organized in June 18, 1929 on the basis of several departments of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Leningrad State University [4] [1] . The laboratories of the faculty were originally located in the former building of the Bestuzhev courses on Sredny Prospect of Vasilyevsky Island .

On May 8, 1930, in the process of reorganizing the structure of Leningrad State University, the Faculty of Chemistry was closed, and the property of most laboratories was transferred to the Leningrad Institute of Chemical Technology , where it was planned to concentrate the training of “all chemists of Leningrad” [3] .

In September 1932, when the university returned to the faculty system, the chemical faculty was restored [1] . In 1932, in close collaboration with teachers and faculty, to improve laboratory practice and independent research, the Scientific Chemical Institute (LII) of Leningrad State University (now the Research Institute of Chemistry) was founded, the director of which was a professor (later a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences) I. I. Zhukov , who did a lot to preserve the equipment and reagents of the faculty at the time of its closure (the scientist was the director of the institute in the most difficult years - during the blockade of Leningrad and immediately after the war - 1942 - 1946 ) [3] . The post-war years were marked by the creation of the Department of Radiochemistry at the faculty, which began to prepare specialists for scientific programs related to the creation and development of atomic weapons, and subsequently nuclear energy. In 1967, the first in the USSR department of quantum chemistry was founded at the faculty. Since the 1980s, the main laboratories of the Faculty of Chemistry and the Research Institute of Chemistry have been located in the suburbs of St. Petersburg ( PUNK ). Some laboratories, however, are still located on Sredny Prospect of Vasilievsky Island and in the Mendeleev Center - the former Chemical Laboratory of the Research Institute of Chemistry of Leningrad State University.
