Season Five
In season five, the focus is on the transparency of government and corporate affairs and on how to get information about such affairs and how it is used. Frames of flashbacks that are present in each season, show the body of Ellen, lying in the alley, as if she had fallen from the roof.
After four seasons of professional and personal manipulation and deception, the fifth season sets the stage for the final clarification of the relationship between Patty and Ellen. In the storyline inspired by the informant and founder of the Wikileaks site, Julian Assandzhem, Channing McLaren ( Ryan Philip ) portrays a computer expert and the founder of the McClarenTruth.org site, dedicated to state and corporate transparency. In a promotional interview, one of the executive producers of the television series uses the phrase “freely inspired”, but in the same part of the interview Philip says that he studied all the materials he was able to get to, both before and after he received this role.
Awards and nominations
The show in 2008 was nominated for an Emmy in the category Best Dramatic Series . In all, the series received 19 Emmy nominations, four of which won. In 2008 and 2009, Glenn Close won an Emmy award in the Best Actress in a Drama Series . In 2008, Close also received the Golden Globe award for best drama actress on the show.
Ratings
The premiere of the series on July 24, 2007 attracted 3.7 million viewers, and in total with DVR views over 5 million in the evening of the premiere. [1] However, the audience dropped significantly during the first season, partly because of the flashback story telling with the flashback too complicated for the average viewer. [2]
The second season attracted only 1.7 million spectators, even despite winning prestigious ceremonies. Despite the low ratings, the channel extended the show for a third season.
The premiere of the third season gathered a measly 1.4 million viewers. [3] During the season, the number of spectators decreased, reaching a minimum of 650 thousand in the middle of the season. The final attracted less than a million spectators.
Due to low ratings and high production costs, many predicted closing the show after three seasons. However, Sony reached an agreement with DirecTV . Insiders assumed that media tycoons would divide the cost of the show, but eventually DirecTV bought the series and extended it for the fourth and fifth seasons. [four]
