Hyundai Santa Fe is a mid-size crossover created on the Hyundai Sonata platform. The car was named after a city in New Mexico . In 2001, this model was the first Hyundai crossover released at the same time as the Ford Escape / Mazda Tribute and Pontiac Aztek . Santa Fe was the backbone of the company's restructuring program in the late 1990s . And, despite the criticism received from journalists for his slurred appearance, the car was a success in America. The crossover was so popular that at times Hyundai could not cope with the existing demand. Since 2007, Santa Fe has been intermediate between the compact Hyundai Tucson SUV and the associated luxury Hyundai Veracruz crossover (which was preceded by Hyundai Terracan ).

In its first year of production, Santa Fe was offered two engines with an appropriate transmission. In North America, an economical, albeit insufficient power, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is becoming the standard and could be equipped with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The 2656 CC (2.656 L) Delta V6 engine offered more power than the four-cylinder engine, but was only available with an automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive came as standard (with traction control option for the V6 engine), four-wheel drive optional. A 2-liter common-rail turbo diesel (CRTD) engine was offered outside the United States. In Australia, Santa Fe went on sale in November 2000 in only one configuration: a 2.7-liter V6 engine connected to a four-speed semi-automatic gearbox. Four-wheel drive was standard. Cheap 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines appeared a few months later, in 2001, but were only available with a manual gearbox. Along with the similar Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute , Santa Fe was also the first compact crossover with a V6 engine.
The car has permanent all-wheel drive with an asymmetric center differential, which divides the torque between the front and rear wheels in a proportion of 60:40. In addition, the differential is self-locking - slipping stops viscous coupling built into it. For an additional fee on the Korean versions, a rear cross-axle limited-slip differential was installed.
2002
Santa Fe started the second year without any changes. Demand for Santa Fe continued to increase, but the owners had some suggestions for a change for Hyundai.
Hyundai increased the size of the fuel tank from 64 to 71 liters and reorganized the location of the icons on the tailgate. The internal layout of the console and the position of the clock have been changed.
2003
Hyundai heard complaints from motorists about the lack of backlighting in the glove compartment, insufficient power and the use of conventional struts instead of gas struts for the hood. In 2003, a 3.5-liter V6 engine was introduced in addition to two other gasoline engines in North America. The larger engine was equipped with a computer-controlled all-wheel drive system.
Details of the automatic transmission control were made chrome-plated in contrast to the matte style of plastic silver in the 2001 and 2002 models. The high-quality Monsoon sound system was the base for the mid-level GLS model and was paired with a 6-disc CD changer in the maximum configuration of the LX version. The final changes in 2003, the models were crossed out by the very unpopular green color Pine Green, which in certain circles of car owners received the nickname "Yucky Green". 4-cylinder models in Australia stopped selling due to lack of demand, leaving the only model on sale with a 2.7-liter V6 engine and an automatic transmission.
2004
Hyundai continues to publish record car sales. Manual climate control in the basic version of GL and the middle version of GLS have been revised very slightly. The central lock confirmingly “tweeted” when the “LOCK” button on the remote control was pressed twice.
The AM / FM radio antenna was moved from the rear window from the driver's side to the roof to the center directly above the rear door.
2005
Santa Fe gets his latest shape change. Changes were made to the grille, taillights, rear bumper , interior instrument cluster. The dashboard was revised in the speedometer, which now had a limit of 140 mph (previously showing no more than 130 mph). Now there was a more convenient pocket for storing payment receipts in the driver's sun visor. Both visors also got the opportunity to better block sunlight coming from the sides. The base version no longer changed, giving way to the Tucson model.
In Australia, all models received bumpers in body color. The Sandstone color was no longer used in favor of the indistinguishable Mocha Frost coffee color. GL's interior trim has gained an advantage, as was the case with the 4-cylinder engine and its corresponding 5-speed manual gearbox. The 2.7-liter V6 took over the duties of the base engine. The passenger airbag could be deactivated, which prevented the airbag from working if there was no one in the seat (or there was a child). 3-point seat belts have been added to the center of the rear seat.
2006
Two colors are no longer used. These are Merlot and Canyon Red. The rare color Dark Emerald Green was available mid-year. However, he did not appear in the brochures, but was ordered exclusively by the dealer. The LX version was renamed Limited and for the first time for Santa Fe, it received the corresponding sign on the back door. Another innovation is the presence of monochromatic coloring, it was a departure from contrasting gray. The monochromatic option is available only in the black “Limited” version. These add-ons started at $ 1,900, increasing the total cost of the car to $ 30,000.
In Europe, the new Santa Fe model was launched in April as the 2006 model, offering a new 2.2-liter diesel engine and an updated 2.7-liter gasoline V6.
2007
In Korea, the model is discontinued in connection with the release of a new generation of the model.

The next generation of Santa Fe made its debut in 2006 at the North American International Auto Show . The first production Santa Fe rolled off the Hyundai assembly line in Montgomery, Alabama on April 18, 2006. He shares the assembly line with the current generation Hyundai Sonata . The new generation is getting rid of the bizarre design of the old style in favor of a more modern look.
In the United States, new generations were offered in the GLS, SE, as well as the "Limited" versions. The new Santa Fe is returning a manual gearbox, but only with a 2656 CC (2.656 L) V6 engine. The 3342 CC (3.342 L) V6 engine (a version of the same engine can be found in the Hyundai Sonata ) is standard on SE and Limited and comes only with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Both models with 2WD and AWD with a 3.3 liter engine have a fuel consumption of 12 l / 100 km in the city and 9.8 l / 100 km on the highway. 2.2 L diesel engine (not available in the USA) with 186 L from. has a consumption in the combined cycle of 7.2 liters and in the urban cycle of 8.0 liters Four-wheel drive Borg-Warner Torque Management, which transmits torque to the wheels having better grip. If the front wheels slip a little, then the rear axle will spin 10% faster. If the front wheels begin to slip a lot and / or the traction control switch is set to the maximum amount of torque (for example, 50%), then the torque will go to the rear axle. The body roll in corners, a problem of the previous generation, was removed in the new Santa Fe. The noise from the road and the wind was also reduced.
Electronic stability control ( ESC ), side airbags for all rows of seats, tire pressure monitoring, active front head restraints, and anti-lock brakes ( ABS ) are standard. There is a heated front wiper, which helps melt the ice that forms in areas with a cold climate. Some features, such as the rear door glass rotation and the lower body trim, were not integrated into the new models.
The interior was updated with a blue backlit control panel (unlike the green used in other Hyundai models), cup holder lighting and high-quality leather on the Limited version. Head restraints in the rear seats caused visibility problems in the previous model due to their size. The new shape of the headrest in the form of "pebbles" allows you to sit on the same level with the upper part of the seat and does not close the view from behind. The central rear seat now comes with its own headrest and three-point integrated seat belt. Child seat holders are also standard.
Prices remain competitive, despite the increasing in size and content functions.
In Malaysia, the Hyundai Santa Fe is available as Inokom Santa Fe. Inokom Santa Fe is available only in the CRDi 2.2-liter turbodiesel and 2.7-liter gasoline V6.
The power unit of the Hyundai Santa Fe is located transversely in front. When driving on a flat dry road at a constant speed, all the torque is transmitted to the front wheels. When one of them slips, part of the thrust (up to 50%) also begins to be transmitted to the rear axle. An electronically controlled multi-plate friction clutch is responsible for this process.
The driver has the ability to force change the distribution of traction in the transmission: on the central panel to the left of the steering column there is a button to lock the clutch - 4WD Lock.
Another way to improve the properties of the car on the road is the ability to disable the dynamic stability control system: the ESP off key is located next to the 4WD Lock button.
Simple symmetrical (conical) differentials distribute torque between the wheels of both axles. There is a system for simulating differential locks by the operation of brake mechanisms. When one of the wheels of the axle slips and a certain difference between the angular velocities is reached, the running wheel is braked.
2008
Throughout 2008, only minor changes were made. As a navigation system, the LG production system was proposed, the Infinity system was the sound system, and the glass roof was standard on Limited models. Hyundai abandoned the non-metallic white interior in favor of a pearl color.
2009
There were minor changes. The 16-inch wheels on the base GLS model (US specifications) were removed and replaced with black steel wheels and a plastic cap. In addition, GLS received black plastic rear-view mirrors in contrast to the body-color mirrors of the top SEs and “Limited” equipment. This limitation in equipment was rumored to be a countermeasure to offset price increases by offering an iPod adapter for a stereo system. Due to the outstanding mirrors and steel disks, it was possible to add an iPod adapter without changing the base price of the car.
2010
Design models of 2010 were engaged in Germany . The radiator grill now includes horizontal and vertical grid elements, in contrast to the two vertical grilles on previous models, and now color instead of black. New rear taillights include all red taillights with expensive chrome plating, and new 5-spoke alloy wheels replaced the 5 and 6-spoke ones installed earlier. All Santa Fe cars now include a standard wireless Bluetooth headset, steering wheel audio control buttons, new dark wood trim, and a metal decorative steering wheel. Devices received a new font and backlight design. A new touchscreen navigation system with rear backup camera is also available.
Changes to the chassis include a six-speed manual gearbox and a six-speed automatic transmission as a replacement for it, unlike the four and five-speed transmission options installed earlier. Engines are 2.4 liters with four cylinders and a 3.5 liter V6, which is also installed on the Kia Sorento . Both made it possible to obtain more power and lower fuel consumption than previous models. Sales began in early January 2010 .
Restyling 2010 and facelift 2012
Added steering wheel heating button. The HYUNDAI BLUE LINK system has been added (in a number of trim levels). The radiator grill has been changed, the appearance of fog lamps and rear lights has changed. Since 2010, they stopped putting regular crossbars on rails. Compared with the "pre-re-balancing" version, that is, until January 2011, the length increased by a few centimeters, the trim was removed from the rear bumper. Silver lining appeared on the front and rear under the bumper. They also stopped installing 2.7 V6 engines, began to put 2.4 Theta II, as well as new radio tape recorders.
In 2012, a chrome trim appeared on the trunk lid.
