The Hallé Orchestra is a symphony orchestra in Manchester , which has been using Bridgewater Hall since 1996 as its main venue. One of the oldest British professional orchestras. It also includes a youth orchestra and choir. Founded in 1857 , the first concert of the orchestra took place in 1858.
History
The orchestra was founded in 1857 by the conductor and pianist Charles Halle as a seasonal one for summer performances at the Manchester Exhibition. In January 1858, a newly formed orchestra under its own brand began giving concerts in the Free Trade Hall . In 1899 - 1911, the orchestra was led by Hans Richter , who organized the premiere of the 1st Elgar Symphony. Subsequently, the leadership of the orchestra was taken by Thomas Beach , Hamilton Harty and Malcolm Sargent , however, during the Second World War, the orchestra experienced serious financial difficulties, which ended with the arrival of John Barbirolly as chief conductor in 1943 . Barbirolli led the orchestra for 27 years, first performed and recorded a number of orchestral compositions, including the Ralph Vaughan-Williams Eighth Symphony.
In the 1990s, the orchestra again experienced problems after leaving the post of chief conductor Kent Nagano , under whose leadership in 1996 he changed the stage, but after joining this post, Mark Elder restored his reputation.
Among the compositions whose premieres were performed by the orchestra are works by Elgar, Vaughan-Williams, William Eluin , Gerald Finzi , Thomas Ades , as well as the symphonic poem Pluto, written in 2000 by Colin Matthews in addition to Gustav’s Canvas series “ Planets ”.
