Biography
Chiara Simoneschi-Cortesi was born in Zurich. Her father was Italian, her mother was German. She studied sociology and political science at the University of Bern , but interrupted her studies when she married an Italian and became pregnant. In 1968 she moved with him to Ticino .
Simoneski is a member of the Christian Democratic People’s Party. From 1984 to 1998 she was a member of the city council of Comano , and in 1996-1997 . presided over it. From 1987 to 1999 she was elected a member of the Grand Council in the canton of Ticino (headed in 1998-1999). In 1999 she was elected to the National Council . For ten years, Simoneschi headed the Federal Commission for Women.
In the National Council in 2007-2008, she held the position of first vice president. In 2008-2009, she was President of the National Council. She was the first representative of the Italian part of Switzerland as president of the National Council since 1979 .
