The city is one kilometer from the A1 motorway , connecting London's capital of England and Edinburgh , the capital of Scotland . Northumberland County became the administrative center of the county in 1981. At the time of the 2001 census, there were 13,833 residents in the city.

Content

History

The morpet arose at the point of crossing the Vansbek River [1] . After the Norman Conquest, the city ​​became the property of the de Merlay family, and in 1095 a castle of the Mott and Bailey type was rebuilt [1] . In 1138, Newminster Abbey was founded by the Lord of Morpet Ranulf de Merlay. [2] The city was badly damaged by a fire in 1215 [3] . In the thirteenth century, a stone bridge was built on the site of a ford across the Vansbek River [1] . The Morpet Fortress was built in the fourteenth century on the site of a pre-existing fortress. Only the main gate and part of the destroyed walls remained to our time [3] .

Until the nineteenth century, Morpet was one of the main livestock markets in the north of England [3] .

On September 6, the most powerful flood since 1963 hit the city. About a thousand houses were damaged [4] [5] .

Policy

The city of Morpet has two levels of local government .

The lower level is the city council, consists of fifteen members. Each of the four city districts elects from three to five deputies to the city council.

The Northumberland County Council, which is the highest level of government, Morpeth has three representatives, one each from three constituencies - Morpeth Kirkhill, Morpeth North and Morpeth Stobhil.
