Creation History

The first temple on the site of the present was built in 1890. It was wooden and built at the expense of the residents of the station settlement Petrovsk-Kavkazsky (now Makhachkala 1st).

In 1905, the construction of a stone temple began, for the construction of which Emperor Nicholas II himself allocated 1,000 rubles. Construction was completed a year later on February 25, 1906. The church was consecrated in honor of the icon of the Iveron Mother of God - the patroness of the Caucasus.

The first rector of the temple was Afanasy Alibekov, he took an active part in the construction of the temple, not only collected money from the parishioners for the construction, but also personally monitored the work of Armenian masons erecting the walls of the church [1] .
After the revolution, the church was closed, and a warehouse and a store were located in its premises at different times. Divine services were resumed only in 1943. In the same year, it was consecrated in honor of the icon of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In 1969, with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy I , the iconostasis from the Church of the Holy Archangel Gabriel (Menshikov Tower) , which is located in Moscow in Arkhangelsk Lane, was transferred to the church.

In 1988, the temple building was taken under state protection as a monument of local importance.

Modern Period

The new life of the temple began after the 1990s. In connection with the outflow of the Russian-speaking population from Dagestan, there is a significant decrease in the number of parishioners. However, the temple began to be updated. June 2, 2000 the temple receives the status of the cathedral. In 2004, to expand the area of the cathedral, a chapel consecrated in honor of St. Alexander Nevsky was attached to it.

In 2005, by the decision of the head of the Makhachkala administration, Said Amirov , the restoration of the temple was started. The arch and walls of the cathedral were re-painted, the iconostasis was restored. The entire interior painting of the temple was carried out by local artists under the guidance of Honored Artist of Russia Abdulzagir Musaev .

In 2012, in connection with the formation of an independent Makhachkala diocese, the cathedral became the department of its bishop Varlaam (Ponomaryov) .
For more than 30 years, until February 2013, the mitor Archpriest Nikolai Stenechkin was the rector of the Holy Assumption Cathedral [2] . He is the author of the form of the iconostasis of the restored temple [3] and over the years of his ministry he was the initiator of many good deeds in the life of the church and parishioners. In January 2013, Archbishop Zosima (Ostapenko) presented Archpriest Nikolai Stenechkin with a bishop certificate “For Contribution to the Strengthening of Orthodoxy in the Republic of Dagestan and Long-Term Pastoral Service” [4] .
