Biography
Isarn was the third son of Count Ribagorsa Ramon II . After the death of his father, who died in 960 or 970 , Isarn I was the co-ruler of his older brothers, first Unifred I , and then Arnau I. The exact date of the death of Count Arnau is unknown, but the donation charter dated to 990 given by Isarn, his mother Garcenda and sister Toda , speaks of him as already dead. After the death of his brother, Isarn I was proclaimed Earl of Ribagorsa, probably sharing the county administration with Toda.
Very little is known about the reign of Isarne I. Historical sources indicate that he was the first Count of Ribagorsa who participated in the Reconquista from the beginning of the 10th century . At the beginning of 1003, the Hajib of the Cordoba Caliphate Abd al-Malik al-Muzaffar made a trip to the county of Barcelona . Initially, success was on the side of the Catalans, whose troops under the command of Count of Barcelona Ramon Borrel I and Count of Urhel Ermengol I defeated the Moors and their Leon allies at the Battle of Thor . However, on February 25, Abd al-Malik al-Muzaffar succeeded in inflicting a major defeat on the Catalan army at the battle of Albes [2] . Christians suffered heavy losses, and several noble people died or were captured. Among the dead was Count Isarn I.
It is not known whether the Earl of Ribagorsa Isarn I was married. From a relationship with a woman named Garcenda, he had one illegitimate son, Guildem , who, due to his illegal origin, could not take the throne of the county. Therefore, the ruler of Ribagorsa was proclaimed the younger sister of Isarna I, Countess Toda.
