History
It is a granite obelisk standing on a pedestal about 5 meters high. The monument has a stepped base in two parts. Below are two wide and low steps of gray unpolished granite . On them are two higher steps of a smaller area of pink unpolished granite.
On them stands actually a pedestal of the same material, on top and bottom it has edging in the form of horizontal ledges with bevels in the lower and upper parts. All parts of the pedestal and the obelisk itself are tetrahedral. A memorial plaque is installed on the pedestal. At the top of the obelisk is a bronze ball, on which, with spread wings, an eagle sits.
The monument was erected in front of the Red Barracks, where, for 50 years, until 1904, the Wilmanstrand 86th Infantry Regiment (now the territory of the Staroruspribor factory ) was stationed. The project author and construction manager is Vladimir Petrovich Martynov. Construction began on October 25, 1913 , when, in a festive atmosphere and appropriate ceremonies, the foundation of the monument was laid. The amount missing for the construction was received from Emperor Nicholas II . In August 1914, V. Martynov was sent to the front. To complete the work entrusted to the sculptor I.N. Wittenberg.
The monument was erected in memory of the heroically dead foot soldiers of the Wilmanstrand Regiment. In 1904, from August 18 to 20, six echelons with the personnel of the regiment arrived at the positions of the Russian army under the Chinese city of Liaoyang in Manchuria , where the Russo-Japanese War was in full swing. The 86th Vilmanstrand Infantry Regiment, as part of the 22nd Novgorod Infantry Division, took part in heavy and bloody battles on the Shah River , at the Khodyabey position and at the Yandylyn pass.
The monument was damaged during the Great Patriotic War . There were several potholes on the obelisk, the sculpture of the Eagle in several places pierced by bullets. Restored in 1953 .
