Northern Islands (from the English - “Northern Islands”) - the code name for the family of graphics processors developed by the graphics division of the American company AMD (formerly ATI Technologies ). Products based on the GPU of this family were released at the end of 2010.

Creation History
According to early information, the GPUs of the Northern Islands family could be created on the basis of a 32-nanometer process technology.
Support for the Direct3D 11.1 standard, which at that time was in development, was announced. [1] Previously, it was rumored that the Northern Islands family would be called the Hecatoncheires. GPUs from the Northern Islands family will be part of AMD’s new platforms, codenamed Scorpius and Lynx, which will be available in 2011. [2]
At the AMD press conference on the results of the company in the past quarter and 2009 as a whole, the head of the company, Dirk Meyer, said: “Now we are increasing the release of the ATI Radeon HD 5000 series and are going to update the entire line in the second half of next year.” Journalists believe that the phrase "next year" should be considered as "next fiscal year ." Based on these considerations, the release date of the Northern Islands is set for the second half of the 2010 calendar year. [3]
On January 6, 2010, AMD Development Manager Richard Huddy, in an interview with bit-tech.net, announced the release date for Northern Islands. In particular, it was said that the release of this GPU family is planned for the second half of 2010. [four]
Video Card Edition
On October 22, 2010, the HD 6850 and HD 6870 video cards based on the Barts Pro and Barts XT chips were officially presented, respectively. Barts chips have the same 5-way VLIW shader architecture as the Evergreen chips, but have an improved tessellation block. In terms of performance, the new video cards are positioned faster and slower than the HD 5850 for 6870 and 6850, respectively. [five]
On December 15, 2010, two Radeon HD 6950 and HD 6970 video cards based on Cayman Pro and Cayman XT chips, respectively , were introduced [6] .
In March 2011, a dual-processor video card Radeon HD 6990 , codenamed Antilles, was released, which received 3072 stream processors. 6990 is based on two Cayman XT chips, each of which contains 1536 stream processors.
Video Card Summary Table [7]
- All models are manufactured according to the standards of 40 nm process technology.
- All models support DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.4, and OpenCL 1.2.
- All models have an I / O interface - PCIe 2.1 x16
- All models support HD3D, UVD3, HDMI 1.4a, DP 1.2.
- 1 unified shader processors : texture units: rasterization units
- 2 The effective data rate of the GDDR5 memory is quadrupled relative to real, instead of double that of other DDR memory.
